Two days ago I took my 14 year old Siamese cat (male) to the vet for a geriatric exam. They did a full blood work up and a physical exam as well.

In order to take care of his teeth, they had to anesthetize him. He had two teeth extracted. They gave him a painkiller when he came around - a morphine based drug.

I got him home on Wed. at about 5 pm. He was groggy but unable to sleep until 6am the following morning. He woke at about noon and, as far as I can tell, hasn't slept since then. That makes it 36 hours since he has had any sleep.

I spoke with our vet and she said that some cats are affected by pain killers in this way. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

I'm really worried about him. Any input or advice
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Poor both of you but I do know what you're going throug. Suggestion, about an hour before you go to bed, play with him. That will make him tired and will sleep. He'll be fine and for a 14 year old, he sounds wonderful. I have Oriental Shorthairs, Meezers and Abys.

Barb - poor baby! I am so sorry that your fur baby had to go through all this. It is wonderful that you care for him so well. We would love you to come to the lounge for a 'proper introduction' !

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

I am happy to report that my cat,
Simon, is now snoozing away and
has been for several hours. Hopefully
this is the end of the insomnia.

It's the craziest thing. Who ever
heard of a cat with insomnia !?!?!

Barbara
