Hi, I'm new!

According to the vet's estimates, my kitten should be one next month. She already weighs 10.5-11lbs, so I think she needs to go to an adult weight loss formula (mixed with the kitten food at first of course)... I am just curious what you guys have used that actually works to reduce a cat's weight. I can't really afford Science Diet, and I definitely want to get her off Iams, because I think that just makes cats fat. Suggestions?!
Thanks!

Here is a picture of Stella just for fun hehe

Welcome to TCS!
Stella is gorgeous!
A gradual weightloss plan is, of course, something you will want to discuss with her Vet. I strongly recommend Innova Lite Canned . Sierra has eaten Innova for years and I fully support their products. I recommend wet food over dry, and if Stella is freefed, you may also want to change to regularly scheduled meals for her.
Please keep us updated!

WOW! That's a lot of weight gain! Thanks... She was prettier as a 4 month old kitten, I don't know why that is... Her coloring seems to have changed a bit... *Shrug*

Well, I am going to the vet Monday to get more Frontline for the dog. Maybe I can just ask then without her coming in? Kitty hates the car, plus I have no a/c which is bad news if it gets warmer in the next few days.

I should've mentioned she eats only dry food... and she used to have 2 feedings a day, but in my training at Wayside (shelter) I learned that since she gulps it all down at each feeding time, her metabolism isn't kicking in long enough to help keep her weight down. So she's being fed smaller portions 4 times a day now, and is better about not gulping it all down at once, but grazes on it like a cat should do. That may start helping, who knows.

Have you thought about just using the Iams formula in weight management??
I have a recommendation but it is about the price of science diet

She looks like she has maine coon in her and they are big. Our one Kitten Kabota was so large that right after birth we started calling him tractor butt. He would just plow into his brother knocking him over while trying to get food. He grew up to be 17 pounds-

No, I do not like Iams. Stella is only on it because at the time I went to get her food, there were limited choices (I went to Wal-Mart late one night in preparation, instead of PetSmart with more choices). The family I used to nanny for fed their cats Iams weight control food and both of them were still big, fat cats....

In that case read labels..

If she is an indoor cat i would say try Nutros indoor formula it has some things that aid in metabolism...
Check bags avoid corn( ground) and by products.. neither is very digestable ...

Hahaha Tractor Butt.. I call Stella "Butt Butt" I don't know why, either, but she answers to it! Sometimes Stella jumps up on the counter with so much force that she slams into the mirror... Hungry much?!?! Sheesh!

She didn't seem to be that big when we got her though... this was the estimated 4-4.5 months (this is the day after we got her)

your stella is very pretty. and all my boys say good luck

my Me-sto is way older (13teen) and is 19lbs i was feeding all my boys percription scienec diest cd -(urinary tracking) but my vet addvised me to switch foods because doctors are discovering that althought this brand is great for treating the urinary tracking its causeing our pets to gain weight to fast. plus i was free feeding my boys.
so i switched to w/d science diet (dry food) witch i realize its very costly. i buy a 20lb bag witch lasts( between my 3 free feedingthem) about a month, for $40.00 dallors here in ca. now that i have them on a schedule feeding time which i feed them once in the am (fill their bowl) and a second time in the evening.
well i hope that i was a bit of help.
good luck and keep us posted.

I agree with Hissy. Innova Lite (canned) works well. I fed my 9 year old male Iams Weight Control and he actually gained 3 lbs on it. After switching him to Innova, he shed those extra pounds and he's down to a normal weight. He's been eating Innova for a year now.

No, she has not been since her last kitten shot one month after we got her. I am just used to a 6lb cat (my mom's cat has always weighed 6lbs) so I am not sure what is "normal" for adults... But she has a big fat pouch on her underside.
