Okay... I am really getting tired of Billy throwing his litter out of the litter box. He throws so much out of it, that it PILES now!!! I have two covered litter boxes. I tried one with a flap, and he just rips the flap off, and burys it in the litter! I'm tired of having to vaccuum the same spot of litter day after day after day after day! Can anyone help me!? This is getting out of hand!

Thanks!

Cassie,

One thing you may try is a scattermat - you can buy them specifically for the litter box, or just get a peice of astroturf looking stuff to put in front of it. Then you only have to carry the mat outside (or to the trash) and shake it off.

I have a TOP entry litterbox called Clevercat, and it cut down significantly on the amt of litter I have to sweep. Now, I still have to sweep up a small amount, but the top of the box acts as a littermat to catch the stuff on their paws, and I just shake it back into the box when I scoop it out. I only sweep around it about once a week!

I thought seriously about the litter mats, and I looked at them at the store, and realized, he still throws his litter WAY past what the mat would cover! I also saw a top entry litter box before, but was a little skeptical on whether the cat would know how to use it.

Thanks for the advice!

My boy Tonka does the same thing - what worked for me was to get a large, deeper box for him. The standard litter boxes are too small it seems, so I got one of those under-the-bed storage totes and use that instead. The sides are deep enough that he can just about dig to China if he likes and very little litter goes over the edges.

I really like the top-entry-box idea.

also, my cat Marsh will avoid the litter mats like the plague, he hates covered boxes, so i came up with the astroturf-like mat solution. I bought two huge mats and put them around the box, so he HAS to step on a mat, and this catches almost all of the litter.. and makes me happy too :p to clean them, you just shake them out outside.

Nano was kicking out a bunch of litter until I bought her a much bigger box with a roof and a trapdoor.

I have a mat around both our boxes--Emma can't stand hers (you'd think it was burning coals the way she walks on it!) but Oliver likes wiping his feet on his. So, things are just a little messier around Emma's box than Olivers. The mess is not quite as bad now as it used to be--I bought bigger boxes w/ tops, and try not to put too much litter in there--my hubby used to put like half the bag in there, and they'd be up to their knees in litter!

I use the same boxes as Gayef, the 31 quart storage containers. They can fit 20 pounds of litter comfortably, and the cats can dig all they want. I also leave my boxes on the cement in the basement. That way I can use a broom to clean up the mess daily, and mop when needed. It's a lot simpler then trying to drag out a vacume cleaner every day.

I wish I had a tiled area to put the litter box! No where to put it at my house... everything's carpeted except the kitchen and bathroom. Our bathroom is too small, and you can't have it in the kitchen. Bummer.

Just a couple suggestions, Cassie:
I do have a box in my kitchen/laundry room (I'm in a townhouse) Granted, it's away from the counters, but it IS in my kitchen

My other box is a covered box on my upstairs landing, with the opening very near my bathroom door. I did this to remind myself to vacuum frequently - when I walk to the bathroom in my bare feet first thing in the morning, and can feel litter underfoot, I get out my trusty DustBuster and vac up in front of the box
My DustBuster is my bestest friend

I have also seen folks hide their box under the bathroom counter, but this is ONLY if there are NO chemicals in the cupboard. I know you said your bathroom is small, but again, just a suggestion.
