(i really wasnt sure where to put this so please feel free to move it mods)

what are the chances that a two week old kitten could climb out of its nest and drown in the catit drinking fountain?

my parents have been trying to 'help' me by giving my useful suggestions and generally scaremongering me.

the kitten is in a cardboard box with a hole cut fairly high up on the side as an entrance. i dont *think* it can climb out but i would never say never.

could it manage to climb out and into the fountain and drown itself? is this likely?

i dont want to move the fountain up high unless i have to (its already the other side of my room) as i have limited space as it is. getting rid of the fountain really isnt my preffered option as it really encourages Maverick (the kittens mummy) to drink more

Kittens can drown in just inches of water. But that being said, even a water bowl would be dangerous for a kitten if it fell into it and no one noticed. I don't think your parents are trying to scare you, I believe they are just trying to make you think about your choices.

I think if it can climb out of the box it can climb out of the fountain -but that's just my $.02
I worried about my kittens drowning in the water bowl too. They are big enough to get out now though so im not so afraid. Im just afraid of everything else they might get into now that they are very mobile. I think im going to buy a childrens playpen and put them in there. Momma can get in and out but they don't have access to the food or the water dishes ect. Maybe that's an idea for you untill they get old enough not to worry about it. You can most likely find one from a thrift store if you don't want to spend a lot for one.

i know they are not trying to scare me but sometimes my mum says stuff to be contraversal (like weaning the kitten now or selling it and buying a puppy. as if- she loves it more than several of her blood children!)

just that when they give good advice the affect gets some what diluted by the stuff my mum says because she's bored!

so you guys would reccomend putting the bowl somewhere the kitten couldnt get too?

Bengalbabe: a playpen isnt an option as they are in my bedroom which is tiny (i lucked out in the bedroom stakes in my house
) but i could put the kitten in a bigger box without a hole than Maverick could climb into from my bed but the kitten couldnt get out of.

this wasnt a problem until today when i had to move the nest of my bed. i dont want to risk rolling on the kitten in my sleep if he can get out. he's growing bigger and stronger by the day and often suprises me by what he can do.

Now, I'm not familiar at all with the construction of the cat it, but, if it is as I remember in pictures, is it not a BIIIIG globe, with a ery narrow reservoir at the bottom? if that is true, then I think that the catit could be more safe than a standard bowl, but if you're terribly worried about it, I'd run it on as little water as possible.

Yes, that can be a problem when the kitty is big enough to climb on your bed. CJ couldn't quite climb up on the bed when I first got her, (I have a high bed) but I would pick her up and put her with me at night, and snuggle with her, and then put her down before I would go to sleep. Well, one night, I fell asleep with her sleeping beside me! I BARELY rolled over on her, and she quickly let me know! I felt so bad! I was so scared that I would hurt her one day. I had a dog at the time, so I couldn't put her out of my room or anything, so I slept on the couch for two weeks, until I wasn't shaken up anymore! That is something you need to be careful of.

yes thats the one. theres raised plastic bubbles at the bottom of the reservoir so its not that deep and the sides are fairly high.

i think i'll try to fnd something to put it on so its higher up just to be safe. my rooms turning into a cattery with more cat furniture than people stuff.

Mavericks slept on my bed since she was 6 weeks old and i havent squashed her yet!

she used to sleep in between my boyfriend and i with her head on the pillow under the blanket. it was really cute!

she was too small to get on the bed too so used to take a running jump and scramble the rest of the way. she was really out of breath when she finally made it.

the new kittens only 2 weeks old so i'm a little more scared of squashing him. going to block up the hole i cut in the box with newspaper and turn it on its side to make sure he cant get out.

why dont you put the waterbowls in another room? like the kitchen?
Ive been wanting to buy a CatIt fountain it looks so pretty! but i presume by the time the kitten is 4 weeks old i dont think it would be able to drown unless it just sticks its head under water..
Over all we never kept waterbowls around our kittens when we had them.

I used to worry about my kittens too when I first had them. I worried about everything. Common sense I think is your best bet.....and a very watchful eye when they are really young.......

we have a water bowl in the kitchen but the fountain has to stay in my room. plus she spends more time in there than downstairs so if we didnt have the fountain we would have to have a water bowl up there which would be even worse!

i think if the kitten fell in it would be big and stronger enough to climb out as it isnt very deep but i cant be certain.

mavs getting really upset with the kitten trying to explore. every time he tries to climb out the box she smacks it round the head like a whack-a-mole game. i'll be so glad when he gets to about 6weeks and is a little less fragile!

I remember when my mother cat was toilet training her babies!
when it peed on the floor she used to bite it so hard that the baby used to mew and then smack it into the litter box!
