Steroids hearing taking place in DC. On one end I understand why they are doing this, on the other the congressmen scolding baseball for it's lack of morality is kind of like Madonna calling someone a slut. I would fold my arms if I was Selig too.

I am sure MLB was hoping the problem would "go away" and didnt' want to deal with it.

WRGAF - Who really gives a ****. They all know the dangers and if they want to do it - let them do it.

It's like smoking - the danger is well known so if someone still wants to smoke it is nobody else's business.

SHHHH - I don't say those things in front of Bijou - it might hurt his "virgin" ears.

I care cause I am a baseball fan. Plus it's apparently becoming more common among teenagers where their sensitive hormonal ranges are effected.

I actually romantisize baseball. We used to go to games in the 70's when I was a kid. I was a big A's fan in the 80's (during the McGgwire/Canseco days) So the drama here is ripe.

I read McGwire said in an almost tearful statement that he won't "name names", which is a jab at Canseco. It begs the question, what is more important being truthful or loyal (of course Jose didn't *have* to write that book...)

Linda! Reminds me of DILLIGAS...Do I Look Like I Give A ****?

There's been dumber things discussed at Congressional Hearings. I hear things like up to 1/3 of the players in high school sports are "juicing" to get their ideal performance and I do think something needs to be done about it. Football already has anti-steriod policies in place, but baseball's current policies are a joke. If it only affected the players themselves, I would agree WRGAF. But since kids see that steroids are the best and perhaps only way to make it to the Big Leagues then I can see where it's an issue that should be addressed. MLB has had the chance to correct it themselves, and they didn't.

Until they stop just giving these guys a "slap on the wrist" when they are caught, it will go on. Until their whole career is on the line, they will keep cheating - it's all about the big bucks in the big leagues. These athletes are so overpaid that the youngsters want to get there too - better chance than winning a lottery. Our value system in North America leaves a lot to be desired.

There was this article on Time sometime back when the steroid issue broke out. And it makes a very good point: Why does a performance-enhanced society scorn performance-enhanced athletes?
http://www.time.com/time/columnist/p...006842,00.html

1) Artificial Improvement
Plastic surgery, cheerleaders with breast implants, taking of Ritalin to sharpen senses, etc
2) Health/Safety
Not likely as fans have no problem with players who "play through the pain."
3) Fairness
Not likely after all no one have problems supporting athletes in Olympics with the millions of dollars in high tech training on the side of developed nations.

Check the article out for more interesting points on this matter.

That article is great! I watched some of the hearing and most of it was just grandstanding by a bunch of blow hard congressmen. And as one guy pointed out the timing is interesting cause baseball actually does have a policy in place NOW. So some player writes a tabloid book and they suddenly care?

Maybe in the end, we have to realize it's all a show. And that's what we want. Except for Bosox fans who remained loyal, we mostly go for the big moments now. These players knew they had two choices, take steriods are get another career. Of course in their defense there were a lot of players who no doubt took them but didn't do as well so there is talent there...

Gosh I remember when one theory about all the home run hitting was that
they balls were bound differently!
