this is a poem of the american brittany rescue website i think regardless it was a dog in mind but i think it can regard to all older pets.
One by One
One by one, they file past my cage
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way
Way past his time, he can't run and play
Then they shake their heads slowly
and go on their way

A little old man, arthritic and sore
It seems I am not wanted anymore
I once had a home, I once had a bed
A place that was warm, and where I was fed

Now my muzzle is gray, and my eyes slowly fail
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong
I got in their way; my attitude was wrong

Whatever excuse they made in their head
Can't justify how they left me for dead
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day
The younger dogs all get adopted away

When I had almost come to the end of my rope
You saw my face, and I finally had hope
You saw through the gray
and the legs bent with age
And felt that I still had life beyond this cage

You took me home, gave me food and a bed
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head
We snuggle and play and you talk to me low
You love me so dearly, you want me to know

I may have lived most of my life with another
But you outshine them with a love
so much stronger
And I promise to return all the love I can give
To you, my dear person, as long as I live

I may be with you for a week or for years
We will share many smiles,
you will no doubt shed tears
And when the time comes
that God deems I must leave
I know you will cry and your heart it will grieve

And when I arrive at the Bridge all brand new
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you
And I will brag to all that will hear
Of the person who made my last days oh, so dear

I think it is sad only at the beginning. Most of the rest of the poem, the old dog finds in his last years a person who would care for him and love him to the very end. That's a happy ending for me.

This may have been written with dogs in mind but from what I have seen it is just as true if not more so for cats. I don't understand how someone can throw away their friend who has given love and been a faithful companion for the best years of their life. I am crying too.

Very good poem. Yes, it was sad at the beginning, but it has a happy ending knowing the dog went to a loving home. This poem reminds me of our adopted cat Katrina. She was 10 years old when we adopted her. She sat in the cage looking so sad, with all the people walking by looking at all the "cute" kittens. My wife and I saw her, looked into those eyes and could not walk away. That was 5 years ago and she is still with us today.

i just want to use it as a reminder to all of the older pets who become forgotten. everyone wants the puppys and kittys the babies and most forget the older animals who make just as wonderful pets.

That is true. It reminds me of my puppy. Grant it, when we got him, he was a "teen ager," an older puppy, but still young. We adopted him on the day before he was scheduled to be put to sleep. He was a faithful companion for 13 years, and he is now in Heaven.
