I guess this is a little late to ask this since I've already joined but...
Are any of you members of Curves gym? They have 8,000 gyms worldwide, so I figured maybe one of you has been to one!
I joined yesterday to do a bit of toning up and really like their 30-minute workout circuit. It's also really need to be working out in a small-ish environment- it's a fun way to make friends with other women!
Just wanted to see what type of results other Curves members have had. Congrats to everyone who has been posting on their weight loss successes- thtat is just fantastic!

I don't use Curves, but I work with a woman who goes regularly and I think my mother went to one briefly as well. My co-worker speaks quite highly of it, though. I think that she likes being able to go first thing in the morning before work and also the smaller, cozier feel to the gym itself.

Susan, Zest is such a cute name for a gym! Ahh, you English folk

Yeah, the half-hour workout is so convenient. When I went in yesterday, there were 2 women in nurse's uniforms who were working out on their lunch break! Now THAT is dedication!

I've never been but I can tell you that in the world of workout it is a highly regarded place. I always hear great things about it through workshops I have to do and things like that. I hope that you continue to enjoy it!

Thanks Katherine, I'll let you know how it is! It's good to hear that it is held in high regard!
I wouldn't be going if I had serious weight loss to do (not enough of an aerobic workout), but it seems ideal for folks like me that just want to tone up for bikini season

Yeah definitely. It's such a great idea since women can be so self-conscious. This way they don't need to worry about being in a huge gym where there's every different kind of person. It's also great for women who are just starting to workout again who haven't been in the habit for quite sometime. It gives them a time frame that seems doable and a comfortable atmosphere to do it in. And of course it's great for people like you who just want to tone up a bit.
I wholeheartedly endorse it.
It's like the antithesis of the UCF gym where I work. Good god I can't imagine if I were overweight how it would feel to go in there!!!! Talk about intimidating!

Girl, I know what you mean. I went to the University of GA....a HUGE school with thousands of students hell-bent on looking their best....this means crowding the big gym. Of course, us girls loved to go b/c we had some seriously gorgeous guys in there working out, but.... it's hard to look cute for these gorgeous guys when you're sweating like a stuck pig!!!

Yeah UCF now has about 44,000 students and the gym is packed daily. What really gets me is all of the girls in there with their make-up done perfectly who aren't even REALLY working out!! I just keep thinking "For god sakes stop taking up space and go to a bar or something!" They had built a new gym at UCF in 2001 that is 2 stories and just HUGE! It's gorgeous and has become a huge selling point for the school. Totally ridiculous how many people will come to a school just for its gym! I find half of the people in our gym to just be so obnoxious.
Enjoy Curves

I love Curves. I need to go back though. The only problem are their hours. It wasn't a problem when I joined, but then my schedule changed and I couldn't get there in time. Now it's back to normal, but I'm out of the habit.

Anyway - I didn't lose a LOT, but I didn't change my diet either. The 1st month I lost 3 pounds and 3 1/2 inches. The problem there was an inch was from around my bust!
My goal is 15 pounds, so if you put it in perspective it's about the right amount for a month.

I really push myself (when I go
) to do as many reps as quickly as possible. Because it is hydrolic equipment, that is what causes the resistance. I felt MUCH stronger and could see more definition to my shoulders after the first month.

Curves claim to fame is the half hour work out, but rather than 2 1/2 times around, I go 3. It only takes a few more minutes, but I felt it was a better workout.

It is very important to keep your heart rate at the level they recommend. If you go to an anerobic state (rather than aerobic) you are not burning fat, you're burning muscle. I did that when I worked out at Lady of America and it was a big mistake. I worked my butt off with very little results.

Good luck! Maybe you're the inspiration I need to get back into it too!

Rockcat, thank you for the inside info! I really appreciate it
Yeah, I definitely see the importance of pushing yourself to do as many reps as possible!
Maybe we should start a "Curves Count" to make sure the other is going as many times a week as they want to. Then we can keep each other on track!

I thought about joining Curves too. I like the small group and NO males allowed

Let us know how you like it! I've been thinking about joining the Curves here. I hate going to the gym and being stared at by leering boys! (I'm not saying all men leer at the gym but everyone knows what I'm talking about!)

My Mom LOVES her Curves. She's been going for almost a year, I think. She's lost a good bit of weight. She goes almost every day.

We have it nearby. I haven't gone of course, being only 14, but my mom is thinking of going.

I belonged to Curves for over a year and a half. I really liked it, but the hours became an issue when I changed jobs this fall. I had to drop my membership because I just couldn't get there in time....

Yeah. that is their downfall. Ours is open M-F from 7am to 12:30 and from 3:30 to 7pm. No Saturdays even. They also close for all holidays. Thanksgiving they close Thurs & Fri. IMO, thats when they are really needed!
BUT- like I said - I'm going back Monday!

Wow, not a lot of hours to choose from! Ours is open 7am to 7pm Mon-Fri and 8am-12pm Sat. It was a bummer for me b/c I like to work out Sat and Sun afternoons, but since it's on the way home from work, I can spare half an hour methinks

We're already spending the $$ on membership, so we gotta keep each other motivated to go!
