hi - my little one olivia was diagnosed with a 'rodent ulcer' (esinophiligranosomething or other is the technical term) a while back. she's being treated with cortisone shots every 6 weeks, she's just had her 3rd. the shots help, but once it's been 5 or 6 weeks it starts bothering her again. so the vet suggested we try a sensitive food, and i took home a few cans of the walthams sensitive chicken and rice. she took to it, and the ulcer isn't bothering her as much, but i don't know if that's just because of the shot or if the food is helping.

anyhow, the ingredients for the food don't seem to be super high quality (ie. byproducts, etc). i'm wondering if anyone knows of a similar food that has better quality ingredients? she was on wellness prior to this, having decided she liked it better than newman's own, eagle pack, and merrick. she did well on the wellness, but the garlic thing troubles me as well. so yeah, is there a similar sensitive/allergy type food that i could feed her that would be a higher quality?

also, has anyone had experience with trying a sensitive food in treatment of these 'rodent ulcers'?

thanks in advance for all help!

Here's a link that will give you more information on "rodent ulcers":
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/eosi...granuloma.html

I really can't give you any tips on a better quality "sensitive" food, but I'm sure others can, and that you'll probably find some older threads with tips if you search for "food allergy" or "prescription diet" threads.

Our cat had a small rodent ulcer on his lip about two years ago, which cleared up after a shot of cortisone. I joined a Yahoo group discussing eosinophilic granuloma complex to find some tips. It's not an English-language group; otherwise I'd give you the link. Perhaps you could find a similar one through Google?
One tip that I have been using is salmon oil capsules with omega 3 fatty acids. I was told to give Jamie a 500 mg. capsule daily while the EG was acute, and one capsule per week as maintenance after it cleared up. I've been doing so, and he hasn't had a recurrence. All you have to do is pierce the gel capsule, and squeeze the oil out over the cat food.
Good luck - I hope it clears up!

Here's a link to some Google groups on the subject: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=EO...NULOMA+COMPLEX

Hi,
I've never heard of diet change for this, but then it's been years since one of my cats had this (my sweet Mervat(RB) had a couple reocurrences).

One food to perhaps consider would be Natural Balance's new venison and green pea dry food - which should be available at your local Petco.

thanks for your advice - olivia rarely eats dry food, and since she's older and we're trying to get her to gain some weight we don't push her to eat it either. is there a wet food you could possibly recommend?

Hi,

I would look for a food that has lower carb content - even consider adding one of the all-meat foods to supplement what she is currently eating, but these are not nutritionally complete, so you'd still have to find an additional food or get a supplement to use with them. Wysong has one line of all meat (and no garlic in these).

Here is an article you may find interesting:article on hypoallergenic carbs for dogs and cats , it's possible looking for foods that contain these only, might help.

Other top foods that I consider quality, but do not know how they might affect her - *Active Life (if you can find it) has lower carb because it just is not loaded with grains or veggies/fruits, *California Natural Chicken and Rice, Innova, Felidae and PetGuard are all good quality canned foods. The two asterisked ones are the ones I'd consider first for her.

We fostered a cat last summer who had a recurring problem with rodent ulcers before he came to us. It cleared up within days of him being at our place. After speaking with his former owner, the one thing we discovered was that she fed him all flavors/varieties of food, and we do not feed beef or lamb to our cats. On a chicken and seafood diet, he was fine.

Good luck!!!
