Tomorrow I, along with a few other so-called "experts"
, have to test the language proficiency of future foreign-language correspondents seeking state accreditation. I really hate these exams, as I feel as if I'm torturing people who are so nervous that they can't think straight. I'd really appreciate it if you could spare some thoughts for those going through the ordeal of an oral examination in a language not their own!

I know what you mean - in January I had to conduct oral exams in English for 68 Bosnian undergrads, whose success or failure meant being able to continue in an English language university. They were horribly nervous, and it is awful when you meet one you know really isn't going to make it. Good luck.

for your "victims".

I hope they survive the ordeal, and do you proud.

Thank you! It's so great being able to come to a place where people really understand what you're feeling!

I'll keep some positive waves going for your victims.

I bet they'll do you proud, though. You obviously care about how they feel and I'm sure they pick up on that. Things are often easier when you know the ones in charge have your interests at heart.
BEST WISHES!!!

WHEW! That certainly does sound a bit scary!! Lots of vibes from me for sure!!!

It's great that they have someone like you to proctor it though. I know that the warm attitudes of the people at the GRE testing site on Monday really helped me to feel more at ease in that tense time. You will certainly help them with your caring attitude!!!
Good luck to them!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! One young lady was almost hysterical, and she broke down and cried (Tip: Don't use eyeliner and mascara if you're going through such an ordeal!), but her test averages and the results of her written exams were enough to offset her miserable performance today. I'm totally drained right now.The whole oral testing process is so artificial that I hate to participate. I keep trying to get out of being an examiner, but the last time I had luck with that was in 1985!

Aww Tricia - I hope your students did ok today and it wasn't too traumatic. I know how you feel from both sides of the table - being an examiner myself and having taken a foreign language course last year where oral examinations were part of the assessment.

Loads of vibes your way!!
