How did I let this happen? I am so cross, though that is nothing to the way Persil is feeling - she is calling, rubbing and swishing her tail from side to side. It started a couple of hours ago and is getting worse by the minute. When I took her for her rabies shot a week ago I asked the vet if he could make an appointment to spay her and he said to wait two weeks and call him again as he wanted to leave it as long as possible with her, taking into account her earlier surgery. Now he will HAVE to do it next week, or as soon as she comes out of heat. I would not want to take the risk with her of doing it while she is in heat.

One thing I am not sure of - it is 30 years since I had a cat in heat - she seems to have a very moist vulva. No coloured or thick discharge, just moist. Is this normal?

I can't believe my kitten is growing up at last! I was remarking just at the weekend that she is small for her age, which I put down to her illness at Christmas.

Well, now you're sure that they didn't see to it when she had her diaphragm operation. I don't have any advice, but good luck!

I never checked out my cat's neither regions when she first went into heat.. sorry. She was also so small for her age we did not expect it either and I quickly started wondering how long it would take for me to go insane from the constent caterwauling. Good luck!

Aw Persil's a big girl now. Tis too bad she couldn't have babies that looked like her.
I know, I know, just joshin' - I know it wouldn't be good for her to have babies.

Now if she and Bijou could have babies...there would be something to think about! But since she is pure alley cat they would probably all regress back to something not so nice in her past ancestry!

She is not so driven tonight. This morning was bad, and the others obviously thought she had gone crazy. Ellie did keep sniffing her though - she knew there was something going on. I wonder if a first heat can be short, it has been barely 36 hours, which does seem short to me. I am going to phone in the morning and make an appointment for next week.

Jenny, I know exactly what you're going through! I have much sympathy for you! It's hard watching them be so listless and confused. And the wailing, OMG! I hope it's over soon and you and Persil will have peace again.

Hey Jenny, I'm no vet, but yes, a cat in heat has a very moist vulva. I got my kitty Jelly spayed last November but the vet who did the spay wasn't good - AT ALL! I was under the assumption that what he did was total ovariohysterectomy. Fast forward four months later, Jelly was in heat! I thought maybe she was just "talking", but no, after just a day, she was definitely in heat - calling, rubbing, pointing her rear in air, the works! I had to spay her again. Poor thing. But at least, she's out of heat, and we're not going to endure more! Goodness! Cats in heat can definitely drive you nuts!

I've never had a female dog or any other female animals besides our cat, Grayce. Does other species experience such urgent and frantic desires to get pregnant?

When my mare would go into heat I had to be much more careful around her. She would nicker and whinny and sidle up to any other horse that was by, and try to back her rear end up to any other horse, then in a flash would squeal and cow-kick at anything that was near by. She was super ticklish and skittish at that time and sometimes riding her was not nearly as much fun as she would not keep her mind on what we were doing but was more interested in other nearby horses. She would nicker almost constantly with a little upward squeal at the end of it the whole time. Out in the pasture she would constantly try to position herself for 'mounting', then hunch her back, 'wink' her vulva, and void. Fortunately, she would have 'silent' heats during the winter months but during the Spring and Summer . . .!

Yes, I have ridden mares in that 'condition' and it can be quite a challenge. Anyway, Persil seems to be almost over it and she will be spayed, subject to confirmation, on Tuesday. I am a little anxious about it, as her lungs are not fully healed from the previous surgery, but it is the same vet, so I am sure it will be OK.

Yeah, I know what you mean! Good thing my males are neutered or else he|| breaks loose! Whew! I think it's the right time you get your female cat spayed so you wouldn't have to put up with her yowling! It's crazy!
