Hello! I have never visited this site before! I need some advice! My boyfriend and I adopted 2 male cats from the local humane society. One was extremely sick with an upper respitory infection... and the other was healthy. Eventually the other one got sick... it's been 3 weeks but both are 100% better. So we got them neutered, 9 days ago. At first (possibly because they were sick?) They were very kind and loving to each other. But now, they are constantly fighting... I've been reading this site for the last few days and have great advice from ya'll! I'm not sure if they are play fighting or what... they stalk each other, and meow/growl at each other (but no hissing). they jump out and attack each other. ... Sheesh. It's annoying. Does anyone have any advice? Do they need toys to distract them from each other? I'm not sure if I should be asking how to calm them down (other than separating them... and water bottles,... which we're doing right now...) or what. When does the testerone levels drop in male cats? Will the fighting deminish when this happens?

Ok if you put your water bottle away that will help. They are more than likely responding to each other this way because now they smell funny. They pick up all sorts of stress scents while at the vet, and they smell like drugs and whatever else they encountered. You need to neutralize their scents so they both smell the same and they are better with each other.
You can do this with vanilla extract, by putting small amounts under their chin and on the base of the tails several times a day.

If they are not aggressive with catnip, you can put down a small pile of loose leaf catnip on the floor and they will roll and rub it all over their fur, thus knocking down the alien smell-

You can also invest in a feliway comfort zone room diffuser and plug that in and outlet in a room they spend the majority of their time in

Hissy- thank you! My boyfriend just pointed out something to me... I took one of the cats over to my parents house on saturday!! I didn't let Mr. Tibbs run around with the dogs they have... I just left him in the basement ... but there are plenty of smells and other things that might have rubbed off on him! Norman is probably picking up on these smells. Your "neutralizing" technique might be just the trick. BUT at the same time, they have been doing this for well over a few days, so it might be more than just other animals on Mr. Tibbs. i'll work on it and see how it goes. Thank you very much! AND how long does it take generally for male cats to calm down after this surgery?
