Ok, I am going to open up a can of worms here, but I think that since this thread is specifically dedicated to discussing these films, I don't think we should worry about not posting thoughts so as not to 'spoil' the film for others. Let's just assume that people have watched the movies if they come to the thread. Otherwise, I picture everybody sidestepping discussing plots.

So....on that note....I didn't actually get to watch Cuckoo's Nest this weekend, but I have seen it. If I recall, wasn't MacMurphey lobotomized at the end of the film? A pretty powerful statement on the consequences of the choices one makes, IMO.
That was a cool link with all those trivia bits. And yeah, Mcmurphy was lobotomized at the end. You could see the two scars on both sides of his forehead when Chief got closer to him. It was sad and also made my stomach turn the way they wasted a life. It makes me wonder how often things like that have happened. It reminds me of a Canadian production called The Sleep Room where they used questionable treatments on mental patients. Scary stuff.

Well, she was, and it was a crime, IMO, that her father had that done to her to prevent a public embarrassment to himself and his career.

Among many others. I was reading up on the man (Dr. Freeman) who invented the ice pick lobotomy and he would just go to mental institutions and perform them... people watching would faint because of how gruesome the act is but he didn't care. He would just go across the country, he did it to *hundreds* of people.

ETA: Frances Farmer is a famous actress who supposedly got one.

-not much I can add to that.

So do you remember which characters you liked in Cuckoo's Nest? There was something funny about Taber (Christopoer LLoyd) and Martini (Danny Devito). they were all likeable though. Chief was quite the character too.

I recall liking all the supporting characters. Reminds me of the movie Crazy People with Dudley Moore and Daryl Hannah.

Lol, I puposefully took a nap during Cats & Dogs. I've seen The Graduate multiple times for my film classes in college, what did you think of it?

Yeah, I should have bumped this thread up Wednesday or Thursday to remind everyone. Anyway, I saw The Graduate and it was pretty good. I was really laughing at the beginning when Mrs. Robinson was trying to seduce Ben. I kept laughing and laughing.
Soon, the movie seemed to get quite serious though and was a little psycho the way he wouldn't leave Elaine alone. I was like, geeeeeez... leave her alone already!
I was quite surprised when Elaine finally agreed to rekindle a relationship with her stalker, (Ben) because that's what he was. I think that is just unheard of. Nevertheless, the end of the movie had me genuinely laughing out loud again when Ben crashed the wedding. He grabbed that big cross of the glass, swung it around, escaped the chasing mob just outside the front doors of the church with Elaine and then slid the cross between the door handles on the outside, so that no one could follow them. I wasn't expecting that at all, so I got a kick out of it.
What does everyone else here remember about the movie?

I watched Cats and Dogs too. It would have been more fun to watch with my nephews when they were younger, but it was still cute. The CG work on the animals to make them look like they were talking was extremely well done, flawless in fact, though I think the cutest part was when the Russian Blue cat was rubbing around Lou the puppy.
That was a real shot.

The thing that I remember most about The Graduate is thinking it was a great movie... until a teacher ruined it for me. I mean, if you think about it, she looks so happy, you feel happy that he ended up with her and she's not marrying someone else... and then I was instructed to look at Dustin Hoffman's face when they're on the bus. And if you look at him, you notice that he's not smiling, he's not looking at her (while most of the time she's looking at him), and he's getting more serious the more they're on the bus. It's as if he's realizing that he has what he wants... and it's not what he really wants at all. So what's supposed to be a happy ending, really isn't.

Did anyone else get that?

Well, I just watched the ending again and I see that now. However, I also saw that Elaine didn't look so happy either. The last time she looks over at Ben, she sees that his mind is trailing off into nowhere and that he doesn't even notice her looking at him. Then she turns her head away and begins to develop a slightly spaced out look too. I never really thought the movie had a happy ending in the first place though. Putting aside the assumption that they'd never get along with their parents and any social circles they had, (I'd imagine that Elaine would have friends that would hate Ben) Ben still had no resolutions for what he was going to do in his life.

Very true on the ending, so the irony is that Ben is in the same place he was at the beginning of the movie.

So, what's on tap for this coming week?

I'm not sure. There a lots of movies I'd really like to see such as:

Runaway Train (apparently very highly rated)

Fight Club (I'm the only person on earth who hasn't seen it yet
)

A Clockwork Orange

My Fair Lady (I saw the play here in my city over a year ago, but I don't quite remember seeing the movie when I was a kid)

Hero

Spiderman 2

I can't really think of any others right now.

Exactly. And it's also like what Ryan said, that at the end even she realized that it was probably a mistake.

Let me shove some of my recommendations in here, just for fun:

-Annie Hall, I love that movie and I've only seen it once and can't remember why I though it was so great
-Run Lola Run, one of my favorites
-Casablanca, I've never seen it and I feel I should've, lol

That's all I can think of!

Casablanca sounds like a really good choice. I haven't seen that movie either.
I haven't really seen Gone With the Wind either for that matter.
