I figured I would get a jump on starting the thread for our weekly film discussions, mostly because I just flipped on the TV, and one of this week's movies, Big Fish, is showing on HBO right now! I'll reserve my comments until I am finished watching it.

Edited to add the link to the weekly picks thread: here

Phooey! Currently we don't get any premium movie channels! Oh well, looks like I'll be headed to the rental store one day this week......whatever day I can locate a car to take out!

Ok, I am halfway through Big Fish, and I can't hold my tongue any longer. I hate it. (Sorry Ryan). I am so not a fan of Tim Burton's films. They are so surreal that I have a hard time believing in the storyline. I love Ewan MacGregor, as well as many of the other actors, but Burton has this way of treading on fantasy in a story that is supposed to be realistic. He did the same thing with Batman.

Of Burton's older films, Edward Scissorhands was filmed in the subdivision where I used to live. He chose this one street that looped on itself to be the neighborhood in the movie. He painted the exteriors of all the houses these dayglow colors. Since part of the subdivision was still under construction, they had to put up all of these disclaimer signs that said the houses were only temporarily these colors, because sales were dropping!

See, i'm particularly fond of it- just wait.. in this movie at least the sureality is a part of the story, it's not just odd all the way through. It made me and my parents and jason's parents cry because we watched it together (I think Jason was as well, but I don't know for sure.

It just ended, and I'll say the ending saved it for me. Even drew a tear. It would have helped if Burton didn't always approach his films from the surrealistic viewpoint.

Being fond of Burton for that particular reason, I disagree, but I can agree that that ending is one that gets anyone with a family.

I have to say that I am not a Tim Burton fan at all. But I did watch this movie and for me it was strange to say the least. The ending finally drew me in, but just briefly. I was left wondering about the whole movie, just like when I saw Momentum which for me totally sucked.

Memento? yes, I wasn't so thrilled about it, and I generally like movies that go upside backwards.. to me there was really no resolution to that particular film.

Well, I absolutely LOVED Big Fish! But then, I love Tim Burton. I liked how it was all tied together at the end, and it really had a sense of resolution.

Was I the only one who really didn't like the son much until near the end?

I really liked Big Fish, though I wish they had broadened Jessica Lange's role. However as usual the book was better, same name but the author's name escapes me. Shame on me, I'm too lazy right now to look it up. BTW, the book was also surrealistic...read the book, it was a gem.

Beh, heidi, I feel tht to be true of many of burton's films- the one who learns the lesson is invariably the one you ony really like at the end..
looking forward to corpse bride? I am.. Personally, I think Tim's favorite actors and actresses are always perfect (but then I'm a fan of johnny depp and helena bonham carter without Tim Burton's approval.)

Okay Deb, I've got one more idea to interrupt this thread for a moment. We could add a poll to it that asks when people might want to watch the movie that week. Each day is a selection in the poll and when the week is over you use your magical moderating powers to reset the votes to zero, but the selections don't have to change. It could also be a multiple choice public poll so that we can see who and when someone plans on watching. So, I could look at who voted and say, "Oh look, Deb wants to watch on Wednesday and Thrusday, so... I'm going to pick Saturday just to spite her."
It could look something like this:

[POLL SIMULATION]When are you open to watching the movie picks this week?

Monday 0%
Tuesday 0%
Wednesday -- 2%
Thursday - 1%
Friday -----------------55%
Saturday -------------40%
Sunday -- 2%

[/POLL SIMULATION]

I loved Big Fish. It was just magical and took me to a different world.

And One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a wondeful, fantastic, hearbreaking film that everyone should see at least ten times in their lives...lol

Absolutely fabulous, it is! I look forward to watching it again!
I have to admit, while I have wanted to see this movie for a few years, it was Elizabeth who brought it up and reminded me! Thanks Elizabeth!
