I drove up and voted, too. I did not participate or listen to the discussion. I was very glad to see such a large turnout! I will be watching for your updates, Gail!

Oh Gail, I am so glad you actively participated and took a stand on the issue.
I really hope the people of Wisconsin do not allow this legislation to pass. I signed the dontshootthecat.com petition this morning

I mean why dont we participate with the kind humans that dump their babies in dumpsters.. ...These are Gods creatures.. I mean my cats are my children, I have been aiding and rescuing for over 20 years.. Not to succumb to this..
These huge idiot men that already shoot the kindest sweetest animal the deer, They already have to prove thier manhood by shooting innocent defensless animals...and have almost extinct so many creatures, What the f??? I mean I am livid. This is ridiculous, and personally hearbreaking.
Wisconsion People have to network a little harder like all the rest of us and re enforce sp/ nue../
I mean stop adopting animals to just anyone,, that will give them a roof.
No cat should ever be outside anyhow..

We have to stress now, more than ever to collar, tattoo, or micro all our babies.. asapppppppppppp. No exuse he doesnt like it. It is a fact of life., Everone get off ya but and take 5 minutes a write a letter to congress and that damn wildlife place in Wsc. Every word counts,,,,,,,,,,,,I cant believe that I am even talking about this as a serious conditon.Go ahead try to touch my cats.. see what happens.. Diaz Family

I watched the NBC affiliate this morning before work and there I was/ Thank goodness they took a small sound bite perhaps 45 sec-1 min??? I sounded fairly intelligent!! They panned the audience other and their I was again!!
One of my cat owning clients called me this am to tell me she saw me on TV too and thought I did a good job.
No updates yet, some counties for for and some against the proposal so far.

Go Gail!!! I'm very glad you took a stand and spoke out on this issue. I hope the more level headed prevail and say NO to this idiocy!

CNN had a story on it...rather pro-cat. Even Rush Limbaugh was going off about it and couldn't believe that this would even be proposed! (He's actually a cat lover, and has 2 or 3 of his own
).

This makes me very angry. I can't stand hunting of any kind anyway, no offense, unless someone NEEDS to do it for the meat to SURVIVE. Other than that, I feel that there is no excuse. Guys and their power-trips, I'll tell you what. How big and bad and brave it must make you feel to hide in a tree and shoot an innocent, beautiful animal who has no clue about it, nor any intention to do harm anyone. It really makes me very sick to my stomach to think about.

I honestly do not think they will pass this...it would get too far out of hand. So many guys will be getting licenses, if they don't have one already, and will go out looking for cats of all kinds, I just know it. People can be so sick. They will be using every excuse and reason to shoot any cat they see...think how dangerous this would get. In front yards, back yards, streets---these are places where LOTS of cats roam(without collars meaning they are fair game, if this is passed)...and at the same time, this is where people exist and it would be far too dangerous for people. This all sounded much better in my mind, so forgive me if it was confusing.

I'm just really upset about this. These guys are just on a freaking power-trip and are doing this out of spite now. These are HUNTERS for God's sake---hunters who kill any animal that is in season, and they are worried about cats killing birds? WHAT THE HECK! How freaking contradicting, because don't hunters kill birds too? Yes! So, should hunters be hunted in turn? The answer to this would be yes, as well, if we are going to start shooting the things that kill and endanger the lives of the birds.

It makes no sense at all, and it angers me very much.

This is just awful. There are many people posting on this very site that have had their cat to escape from their home for whatever reason. Passing this law would mean that people whose cat escaped from their house could be just shot by some idiot.

GOOD NEWS! Regardless of the vote, it isn't going to become a law.
"DNR Secretary Against Cat Proposal

Wisconsin
Apr 12, 2005

The Wisconsin DNR Secretary says it won't be open season on stray cats in the state. Secretary Scott Hassett says that will be the case regardless of how residents vote on such a proposal. Hassett says there are too many unanswered questions and problems associated with killing roaming cats. He says if a barn cat wanders onto a neighbor's property, is it fair game? Statewide results of an advisory question on the feral cat issue should be announced Tuesday. "

I still cannot believe that so many people voted FOR this idea. They also want to reduce to legal age of hunting from 12 to 10. Just great, I can picture a bunch of 10 y/o boys with guns legally killing the neighborhood cats! I'm so glad the vote is irrelavant now.

Well thank goodness some common sense prevailed!!

I was talking with my hubby over lunch about this. That rule of "no collars" is just stupid. How easy would it be for a cat hating neighbor to see a cat with a collar, shoot it, and remove the collar? Or long haired cats whose collars are obscured by fur?

Perhaps some good can come of this, in educating a lot more people about TNR and about the fallacy of the study so commonly used to justify this nonsense by saying that cats kill an exorbinant number of songbirds. If it says anything, one of the links on the www.dontshootcats.com (on the home page and the faq page) is to Stray Pet Advocacy's "Addressing The Wisconsin Study" article, and there is also a link to SPA's "Feral Cat Predation and Its Impact on Wildlife" article on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources page on Feral Cats (http://dnr.wi.gov/org/nrboard/congress/cats/). Yesterday alone, we had 470 hits on our website. That's how many we usually get in a week! So a lot of people are looking and learning about these issues. And Christy, Laurie and I just hope that perhaps, just perhaps, our articles maybe made a difference.

Right, Alley Cat Allies is fabulous! I was really commenting on the amount of traffic increase our articles have seen, which is great! Not just for us, but for the CATS - that's the important point.
Hopefully people are learning about feral cats and TNR through this god-awful proposal.

Please...do whatever you can to save the kitties. The shooting of cats is revolting. I did not know about the "alleycat.org" site. Thanks

That's fantastic that people are learning more about feral cats... I know that before I joined TCS and hit your site, I knew nothing... I actually thought they were cute cats but that's about it. Now I know there's more to it than that.

Oh and I hope this 'law', or whatever it is called technically, doesn't pass. Ugh.

I live in wisconsin, I for one absolutely KNOW that there are a lot of mean temperd cat haters out there who would shoot someones pet cat just because they felt like it. Its a sad thing to say, but there are a lot of intolerant rednecks out there. Oh I have had dreams where someone has killed my cats, or let them outside and they died somehow. Lets just say, those are very violent dreams
I wouldnt put it past some people in the town I live in to sit around waiting for people who have outside cats to let their cats outside! The spaying and neutering programs sound much better to me. Still, if that passes or doesnt, I dont let my cats outside. They go outside on their harnesses and their leashes ^_^

My mom and I rescued a longhaired rust colored cat when I was about 12. We lived in a side by side duplex and the neighbors had like a jillion bird feeders everywhere (yeah one of those kinds ) They chased the cat (which we dubbed Rusty) out of the yard with a frying pan, throwing things at him until we told them to stop. They said they did it because he was looking at the birds. You know its like.. woah sorry the cat's a stray and is starving to death... people like that annoy me. I like birds too, I have several bird feeders in my backyard because its fun to watch them, but hey, its the way of life, you dont go tracking down a hunter because he shot your favorite mourning dove now do you? I'm glad that thing wont pass because I seriously know of a lot of people who would take advantage of that.

IMO song birds are a nuisance. They poop on my car and kill innocent worms that fertalize my garden. They also carry diseases like the West Nile Virus. I propose a bill to make them an unprotected species. Help me save bugs and support my stupid solution to a problem that isn't even my responsibility to fix! I wanna be like Mark and make a mockery of human intelligence.

BigOrangeMenace and gilbertgrape, you are absolutely correct. It won't stop at shooting cats. Someone's kid will be shot by accident. Can you imagine neighbors having the authority to pull out their guns and just shoot cats? It won't stop with cats. Next will be deer, then raccoons, possums, coyotes, dogs, and yes, kids by accident. And it won't stop at their property. Stop the killing.

If this law had been passed, can you imagine the legal can of worms? Think of it... Your neighbor with his gun ready to shoot aims for your cat that is running back to your property. He shoots your cat on your property and kills your cat. You sue the neighbor for killing your cat, have him arrested, and throw his butt in jail. What if he trespasses on your property with his gun? You have him arrested for trespassing, possessing a firearm, and throw his butt in jail. What if you hear gunshots near your property? Your family and kids are living in fear and the kids don't feel safe playing outside. You cite your neighbor as a public nuisance, a danger to your children and family, have him arrested, and throw his butt in jail. The list can go on and on...

Do you remember those concealed weapons laws that were passed in some states? I'm wondering if they were passed to give "hunters" carte blanche to go on a killing spree.

Well, that's it for tonight!

Well I don't know if anyone has updated this HORRIBLE news, but apparently the idiotic people of this state (I live in Wisconsin) voted to continue the process of moving this law forward. I just can't believe it. My guess is the gun toteing bubbas of this state came out in force & the average joe decided not to. The vot was fairly close, but I can't remember the exact numbers. I just don't think your average person, much less red neck bubba has any idea the differnce between someones cat that got out & a ferral cat. Needless to say I'm heart broken right now & frankly for the first time in my life ashamed to live in Wisconsin.

MMMMMAAAADDDD! I don't think it's in place quite yet. I'm a birder also and I KNOW the damage feral cats cause. BUT, I also know that I have 2 indoor cats that will not wear a colar. And cat are good at loosing their colars when they get out or lost. If they got out then someone could just shoot them? Kinda defeats the tatoo or the microchip if it gets scanned AFTER the cat is dead huh? I'm sure ther are better way to deal with the problem. If it requires the killing of cats let it be very selective and a last resort. I think some people just hate cats and would like to kill them. I've heard many of these people at work laughing at how great it would be to kill a cat. ERRR.

OK off the soap box!
