OH MY GOODNESS. We are going away camping over easter and the person we had to "cat sit" for us is no longer available. Unfortunately, the cattery we have used in the past (that is GREAT, indoors, set up like a cave, separate areas for the cats, large space, toys, cat climbers, climate controlled, music piped through and a water fountain they have access to one at a time throughout the day) is booked out!

So we went and viewed about 8 other catteries today and they were DISGUSTING. I wouldn't want feral cats even to live there. They were hot (tin shed type areas in the sun), smelly, small, dirty and disgusting.

We really don't know what we're going to do now. We may have to just leave them at home and ask the next door neighbours to feed them twice a day (although we dont know the neighbours that well), or see if we can get my sister to come over once a day (she lives a decent way away from us though).

GRRRR - I don't understand why there aren't more businesses set up to cater for cats like this. Some of them were even called things like "home away from home", "angel retreat" and "pampered pets" YEH RIGHT!!!!

It is incredible how many rubbish catteries ther are compared to good ones! *sigh*

Are there no other recommended cat sitters that you can find? Maybe ask at your Vet, they might know someone - or a Vet Nurse might help you?!

I hope you find someone as you don't want to be worrying while you are away!

I could cat sit for you... but I live in the Philippines!

Hope you find a good one.

It's because of places like that that I wish we had something like a "Department of Family and Children Services" for animals, so that they could go in and investigate places like that to ensure that animals are in healthy, comfortable environments. Those poor kitties

Perhaps your vet could recommend a reputable cat sitter to come into your home and care for the cats?

My vet actually pet sits as a hobby so I am very fortunate. Do you have any friends that your cats are comfortable with who would be willing? That is what I do as my cats know them and my friends love them as well.
I sure do wish that I had the money and resources to open a cattery! That would be a dream come true for me!

The vet tech at the clinic where we used to live pet sat and while I normally had a really good friend come in and cat sit while I was on holidays (and I would do the same for her cats), whenever she wasn't available, the vet tech usually was. I always felt very confident that someone responsible and knowledgable was looking after the cats. See if your vet has someone who works for him/her or can recommend someone who petsits to come into our home while you are away. Good luck!

I know how you feel.
We had to put our puppy Caeser in a kennel, and I saw one SO gross. I don't even know how the owners could bear to call it theirs. The dogs were screaming. They got hardly any attention, spend all their time in a huge crate. Gross!
We got a dogsitter, and he got walked, fed, and played with two times a day. It worked out much better.

If your vet's office doesn't know of anyone, try calling local shelters. I volunteer with a woman who cat sits, not for the money but because she'd rather see the cat stay in their home then taken to a cattery. I know if I ever get in a bind I can call her and my cats would get two daily visits that involved a lot of play time!

Personally, we've always asked our next-door neighbor to come over once a day, and asked my grandparents to do the same. They're both familiar faces, and the cats love them. I don't know how much a cattery or a pet sitter costs for a week, but in our neighborhood, pet sitting usually means about a hundred dollars, though it's always hard to get the other person to accept the money. (We have a network where we watch each other's pets - cats, dogs, lizards, and birds - whenever someone goes out of town.)

I'm lucky one of my friends (who lives 10 miles away) comes over to feed, water and litterbox the cats. But only every other day. She will pick up paper and mail if I forget to stop them and water plants. She refuses money. My neighbor's children are getting older though (6 & 8) and I would like to try them out with the cats-they really like the cats. My sister has hired pet sitters for like $10-$15/day.

We found a WONDEFUL place!!!! It's a long dirve, but well worth it. The boys have a HUGE area, with their own couch, cat scratching post, a window etc etc! It's in a temperature controleld environment and the tvs are even on during the day for them to watch/listen
YAY!!!

this is a very old thread. the last post before yours was in 2005. some of the members who posted may very well not be active here on TCS (the cat site) now. i mention this because you may not get a reply from anyone in such an old thread.

but...Welcome to TCS!
