I rented The Human Stain (Kidman, Hopkins) and a Chinese movie, Jou Dou. I haven't seen it for years but it is my all time favorite. It's mesmerizing. Sasha & Saba had chicken off the bone! and I also baked an apple pie, so it's time to settle down....

So all you need is some vanilla ice cream for that pie and you're set.
I'm going to sip on sparkling grapefruit while I watch We Were Soldiers. -nowhere near as good as apple pie.

I have the ice cream!
Y'all enjoy the movies, I hope I can participate next week!

Cindy I guess I've had you on my buddy list for quite a while now too! I don't think I've seen you online before though...

Gibson was especially convincing as a tough, but compassionate as Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore. There weren't any characters I didn't like in the movie, though I wonder what other people would think of Sam Elliot's role. He pulled it off flawlessly appearing to be tough at all times, but somehow I never felt that he would be heartless or cruel inside. The movie pulls on your heart strings all throughout the story and like any other war movie, it had me on the edge of my seat wishing that no one had to die. It was sad to see all the wives of the soldiers get the telegrams. I don't know what else to say. The movie was done extremely well in all aspects and I don't know how anyone couldn't feel touched after watching it.

Ok, here are my suggestions. First off, let's have a thread that simply tells what the movies of the week are. That way, there is no 'weeding through' to find the titles. We could sticky it over in Paws and Reflect, if you like, Ryan. Then, we could have discussion and comments in this thread. Also, I think the decisions for the weekend upcoming should be posted early in the week, so that folks aren't limited to Friday/Saturday. Some people work odd hours, and might actually go out and rent the picks earlier in the week. Ryan, you'll remain the head guru of the movie club, but you could name a different person to pick a 2nd film, if you like.

I had Wednesday as the day that the movies would be picked by, but that would be Thursday for some people, so that may be too late for anyone that wants to watch the movie earlier in the week. How about Monday or Tuesday? Which one do you think would be a better day to announce the movies on? I hope it's not already getting tedious deciding on the guidelines, but that's just the nature of forums and once they're established it should be nothing but smooth sailing. Here's how I summarize of the thread location ideas:

Option A:
  • I announce the co-hostess in this thread on Sunday (today).
  • In this thread we can discuss which movies we want to watch.
  • On Monday or Tuesday, I make a new thread announcing the movies in the opening thread.
  • We watch and comment on the movies in the new thread.
  • The co-hostess picks a new co-hostess on Sunday.
  • We discuss which ones we want to watch again and then the co-hostess makes a new thread announcing the new movies.
Option B:
  • We discuss what movies we want to watch.
  • We have a sticky in Paws and Reflect that announces the movies on Monday or Tuesday.
  • We comment on the movies in this original thread.
(Is that what you mean Deb? For this idea, where do you picture us openly discussing any movie suggestions?)

Option C: Everything is discussed and announced in this thread.

I think a seperate thread to announce new movies and just you Ryan post there after you talk to the guest host/ess as to the second movie. Then all discussions can take place in this thread. Might be cleaner and easier to find the new movies.
We can also use the same 'Movie Sticky' each week and just put a new date in the title bar. I hope I'm explaining this well... lol

That's what I picture, Ryan. We have a thread stickied in P&R, where you announce the movie(s) of the week. That would be an easy find for anyone interested. Then, this thread, or a new movie club thread could contain all the discussion. It's kind of a pain to have new threads for each week's movies. Makes it harder to keep track of, and the first person to comment would then start the new thread. I picture people missing that and having a lot of threads to merge. Plus, interested parties can just subscribe to one thread and get updates.

I had a vision of you posting one film selection for the week and a rotating person selecting the 2nd. I really didn't picture having a huge discussion about what the movies would be, just discussion of the films after viewing. I guess I feel like if we spent days getting input on the week's films, a decision would never be made. As to suggestions, I guess whoever gets to pick one of the movies would simply go with a personal preference.

Okay, well that's a good point about avoiding big discussions on which movies to choose. It might drive people nuts and a decision might never get made. What do you think of making Monday the movie announcement day?

Yes agree! That's what so nice about being the Revolving Selector or whatnot of the 2nd move - go with whatever that person suggests! Why the need to discuss what to watch? The thread can be for conversations, etc.

Okay this is getting clearer already and it's only Sunday!
We'll let the co-host/hostess choose the exact movie that he/she wants. I will choose a movie as well, but I encourage people to send me suggestions well in advance if they like.

I just wanted to say that I agree with the idea of having a seperate movie thread that would JUST be for annoucing the new movie for the week (don't want it to get cluttered with people's thoughts about the movie). Then maybe we should start a new thread for the discussions... this one's kind of full of ideas and we could keep it for if we got a new idea in the future or something that we would need opinions on.

Things are sounding great guys - I'm getting excited!

Great idea! I live out in the boonies, and the two closest videotheks have gone bankrupt, which precludes my being an active participant, but I look forward to the tips. I currently have the flu, and am basically vegetating. Yesterday I watched "The Matrix" on DVD, and was underwhelmed.Good tips would be quite welcome!

This is starting to sound good! Each week a new person can pick the 2nd movie, so we're bound to get representation of all tastes, old and new. I agree with Monday as new movie day, and also a brand new thread for the after-viewing discussions. We can link the pick thread and the discussion thread to each other.

That sucks if renting movies is just so inconvenient. What do you do when you feel the urge to chill out and watch a movie then?

Okay these ideas are coming together really well now. Once the new thread is started tomorrow, we can let this thread get burried. If we really need to resurrect it we can, but the new thread will likely suffice. Just to make sure absolutely sure, the "brand new thread for the after-viewing discussions" means that we don't make another discussion thread every single week. Is that right? Sorry if I'm seeming slow about this.
