Well as some of you know, my kitty possibly has uri (phoned the vet) and i came home from work tonight and she started coughing....before she was just sneezing, running nose and eyes. I'm going to phone the vet again in the morning. We don't have a 24 hour emergency phone number in my area.
I'm hoping that they will let me bring her in earlier in the morning. I'm really dont know what to think....she still playful, hungery and thirsty
shes well hydrated. Is she getting worse? Im really confused. My fiancee thinks she looks better today.

i dont know....im really worried right now
i ran the shower to get things nice and steamy for her and i dont think that helped much...

the good thing is right now shes begging me to play with her and acting all cute....i dont know what to think

Well we phoned the vet this morning
it doesnt sound to good. the vet people said either her cold is worse or she may have a heart problem!!
this scars the crap out of me...shes only 2 years old!
it sounds really serious!!!
They said that they were gonna have to book her on a special time so incase the cold is really contagious! She now is gonna go in on monday but they gave us an emergency phone number for the weekend. Even the phone number freaks me out....I really hope I dont have to use it! They said im supposed to keep her calm and relaxed incase it is her heart thats bothering her but SHE WANTS TO PLAY WITH ME!! Am I supposed to snub her and say no....then shes gonna just start meowing and me and gonna look all cute. I dont think i can so no to that!!!! What if she gets mad at me for not playing with her...thats not keeping her calm and relaxed!!!

well im gonna go...im gonna start crying soon...gotta take my mind of it

How scary for you!
I know it's hard but try not to focus on the worse scenerio, the vet hasn't checked her yet so it could very well be a cold. Sending good vibes to your kitty and you.

Kittylea - I know it's hard not to worry, but for your kitty's sake, try not to get too upset. Yes, coughing can be a symptom of heart problems - but that's at the extreme end of the spectrum of what this could be. My guess is that this is just part of her URI. After all, she was recently sneezing and had a runny nose and eyes. It seems far more likely that the coughing is simply another symptom of her "kitty cold".

To rule out heart problems, a cardiologist should do an echo (ultrasound) of her heart.
I had this done recently for my 4 year old boy when a vet thought she detected a slight heart murmur. There are heart problems that are notorious for striking young, seemingly healthy cats with no warning. Again, I don't think that's your kitty's problem, but the only way to be absolutely sure is by having her examined by a cardiologist who can perform the echo.

Please let us know how she's doing. TRY not to worrry - you don't want to stress her!

Well it seems that shes feeling better today than yesterday. She didnt cough at all last night until around 6am when I accedently hit her in my sleep and she jump off my bed. She was purring when i got out of bed around 8 and it sounded alot less congested. Shes also being a whole lot more annoying about wanting to play to.

Even if shes all better by monday i will still be taking her to the vet just incase there still is something i dont know about. I dont want it to come back again.

Lets hope this is a good sign that shes all right and on the road to good health

I forgot about a question that i was wondering yesterday
If they do xrays of her chest, do they keep her over night for that?
I hope not, ive never slept without her sleeping beside me

Hi Kittylea, I was glad to read that your little girl is doing better!

If she gets chest X-rays, she will NOT need to stay overnight, so don't worry about that! They can do them while you wait. If they are looking for heart problems, though, she'll need to have an echo done since it's a more precise and reliable test. It is also, unfortunately, expensive. However, it's the only way to know for sure if there is a heart condition.

Hope she continues to get better quickly!

Thank you for all your help so far!
I just got home from work (i was thinking about her the whole time) and she had another coughing fit after she jump off the bed again. Her breathing is a bit heavy again but she did just cough....and now shes getting into trouble scratching my computer chair (silly kitty). Cats are really hard to read sometimes. I wonder how long she has actually been sick for.

Again thanks for all your help!

Shes pretty bad since i got home from work i noticed. In one hour she had coughing fits three times! Its heart breaking to watch her, sometimes i have to leave the room so i dont start crying, other times i just want to make her feel good by sitting beside her and pet her. Its sooo hard.
Oh crap im crying again...I CANT WAIT TILL MONDAY!!

When i left for work this morning she was doing sooo good.

Sorry that im soo emotional. Its hard. she's the first cat ive had since i was like 12. So that like 9-10 years. I LOVE HER SOOO MUCH!

Please don't get upset with this question, but do you or anyone in the family smoke? If so, you need to let the vet know about the possibility of second-hand smoke being a factor.

I just went through something similar with my kitten, Chester. He had an URI when I fist got him and I ended up putting him on antibiotics. For the first couple of days he made something close to a coughing sound. I think it was actually the mucus loosening in his sinus's, because the sound was more like what you would go through if your head was so conjested that you couldn't blow any of it out. It went away in a few days though and I haven't seen it since (2 months now).
I think that you should certainly bring the little tyke to the vets come Monday, especially if you're worried about it. From what our vet has told us, coughing while having a heart murmer can be a sign of conjestive heart failure onset. I would agree with the other folks on the board though, I really really think that she's just got one monster of a booger that she's fighting off and you're doing all the right things.
Sending healing vibes your way,
Jess

Kittylea, if you have a humidifier or vaporizer, put her in a room with it - it may help her breathing and ease the coughing, too.

I know this is so upsetting for you, but try to stay as positive as you can.

Lots of good wishes to you and your adorable cat -

I don't have a vaprizor, but when she got bad last night i put her in the washroom with the hot water running for a little while.
The problem with this is that she doesn't like the wathroom today. I might put her in her carrier and put her in there tonight before i go to bed. Hopefully it wont be to scary for her this way
