I have two fabulous male 6 month old brothers who were just neutered YESTERDAY. The surgery went SO well - they acted as if nothing happened at all. They have NEVER had a problem with using their litter boxl, until today. I got home from work, and they were acting perfectly normal. Neufi pooped in his box, then jumped up on his favorite lounging chair (a little cube bean bag) and peed there. I couldn't believe it. Does anyone have a clue why he would do this out of the blue and how to do my BEST to ensure that it won't happen again? It soaked all the way through to the very bottom - I'm not even sure I can wash out the beans, so I might have to throw it out. But will he do this in other places? I'm so surprised, I don't get it at all. I didn't change any of their environment recently - the only big change is the surgery, but again, they acted so normal afterward. Peftectly healthy, happy, energetic as always. Any thoughts???

I am not sure if this might be the case, but perhaps yesterday after getting home from surgery he tried to urinate in his box and because of the surgery felt some discomfort. He had a stressful day yesterday, so he may now associate the litterbox with yesterday's discomfort because of that. A suggestion to try - you have two cats - get another new litterbox and put that down as well. Use a really soft, diggable sort of filler like one of the finer sandy scoopables (Arm and Hammer is great) and see if that makes a difference. You might want to just check with the vet today as well to see if there is a chance he might have developed a Urinary Tract infection - stress can act as a trigger for one - and he may need a round of anti-biotics.

I would try the additional litterbox though, and good luck.

If you can take the seam out of the bean bag cube, you should be able to remove the beans inside, wash them and let them dry, then return them to the cube and re-stitch up the seam. You may be able to find a shoe repair shop or a tailor/seamstress if the fabric is thick to sew the seam for you. Be sure you use an enzymatic cleaner on both the fabric and on the beans:-) or even after all that work he might still smell the urine and repeat the experience.

the beans would have been soft and yielding on his poor sore bits.

kathryn gave you some really good advice. but i would suggest buying new beans if possible.

he's had a bit of a shock thats all. count yourself lucky, some cats from day one consider bean bags litter trays as the beans move around under there paws and are very absorbant and 'diggable'.

Two cats should have three litter pans. They normally poop in one place, then move off and pee elsewhere. It is instinctive as cats do that to keep predators away. It's ingrained in them.

If you have 2 cats, you should really have at least 2 litterboxes. I would put an extra one also to be safe. If there are different places in your house to put it I would try that. Maybe in the bathroom or laundry room or closet?? If they continue to pee elsewhere, you might want to put them in the bathroom for a day or 2 so they recover ok. Even if they seem ok they should be running or jumping around a lot for a couple of days.
