I didn't see my worst pet peeve on your list Ryan- people who post bad advice while passing it off as "a miracle in a can."
You're right, but maybe I've just never seen anyone post bad advice in any forum of any kind before.
I agree though and I think that sometimes in other cases, when extra personal issues are involved, a person can ask, "What do you think of this?" when what they want to hear in response is: "You poor dear. I feel really bad for you, but you're handling everything with such perfection and grace that I have absolutely no advice to offer you."

I put down spelling, and I am actually a poor speller!

Also I think brevity is key, super long posts make me end up going elsewhere.

I agree with Maverick! I also hate it when people add symbols and signs into their spelling to make it look cool. I don't know why, but I always think of that as a "15 year old boy trying to be cool" method of communication. I guess it doesn't help that I can never understand it either

I do not mind replies that are less then the signature... but I DO mind signatures that are like 200-400 pixels (or more) high after the photos and or a few tickers and some text... keep em under control please!!!

My biggest pet peeves are the spelling and grammar issues, and longwinded posts all in one paragraph. If it takes a lot of words to say what needs to be said, fine, but it's really irritating to have to wade through one ginormous paragraph.

I don't get too worked up about off-topic replies, as long as it's just a quick sidebar, and doesn't hijack the thread. I'm not that bothered by swearing, disguised or not, as long as it's not constant, and I'm not bothered by duplicate posts -- anyone can make a mistake.

Another one that I would have put on the list, though, is the exclusive use of large print and bright colour in a message: these should be used for emphasis, and it's possible to be really creative, but a whole message in large bright print is very irritating and I usually just don't bother reading it. Too bad -- the person might have had something very worthwhile to say, but I'll never know.

The biggie of them all, though, is the last one -- the poster who asks advice and then either ignores it or dismisses it argumentatively. As Susan said, if you didn't want to know, don't ask.

People who don't really know what they are talking about giving out bad advice as an authority. I guess both of these are more than pet peeves to me, because on a board like this we are many times dealing with literally life or death. Bad advice for a health problem, obvious. Bad advice for a behavior problem could mean relinquishing the cat to a shelter. Bad advice for ferals could mean a lot of bad things to both feline and human...

As for actual pet peeves, I have to agree with chronic bad spelling and grammar for native English speakers. Must be the English major and former teacher in me.
And of course YELLING.
Thankfully in such a forum as this there is always someone willing to come along and offer "better" or "good" advice. It is always up to the person reading to judge the opinions expressed and take everything with a grain of salt. It is also free to call a vet and ask a question in most cases, so although this is a great website.. dont get me wrong.. perhaps people should not take this as the only source of information. If in doubt, always call your vet's office or emegency animal hospital and ask them before going to the computer to wait an hour for a response.

I have to admit that I have been guilty of that a few times. But that is ONLY because I'll post something, keep up with it as well as I can, then it gets "buried" under a lot of new posts and I'll forget what I posted in the first place. Sorry y'all, Amy has bad memory

So just to update everyone on previous questions that I've asked (and maybe did not follow up on as best I should)...Eponine loves the new apartment, Feliway is great, I've found some wet food that she likes (for that weight gain thread), and I am still on the lookout for a new kitten. And thank you for everyone who has ever said a kind word or given me great advice- I genuinely appreciate all of it
Whew!

That is clearly stated as Rule #1 that everyone who registers agrees to. That's good advice for the Health & Nutrition Forum, but honestly you can't always find a good resource for feral resources or situations posted in even Behavior and SOS where someone will get back to you in the same time frame as we can here. The thing is that people who come here with one question don't know who traditionally gives great advice, and who is blowing smoke. It's just frustrating to see people take the easy choice, the Miracle in a Can advice, and see the cats suffer because of it...

I voted for the last one also. I agree that people often don't heed the advice given because they are looking for a miracle cure or for someone to tell them exactly what they want to hear. I feel, though, when someone takes the time to give this person advice, sometimes even researching a subject for the member or putting their heart into the advice given, it's polite to acknowledge that the reply was made, and really, at the very least, to not argue with the person who took the time to offer their help!
I also voted for the all caps. It's ok for occassional emphasis, but not for an entire post.
I'm really happy to see not many people have voted that their pet peeve is too many smilies!

I agree... But in the end it comes down to what God has given us, the ability to take in what we can, make a decision and make a choice upon our own free will based on all the information presented before us and our own free will to make that decision. If I read in one post that shaking a can of pennies or spaying my cat with water is bad, and then in another that it works for someone else.. its upto me to try to figure out what will work and what is perhaps going to do more harm then good. Noone here is paid (as far as I know) to give answers and provide advice. So noone is in risk of loosing thier "job" and "income", but for the most part we all desire to help even in some cases with mis-guided information or beliefs based on our stimga's formed in our youths or upbringings. So although everyone does not pay attention to any rules of useage or even consider some people might not know the best advice.. hopefully they can realize that not everyone is an expert and mainly gives advice tainted with their own opnions and experiences. With almost everything I post, if I am not sure or feel confident, I freely admit it.. hey I am not a vet, I might be wrong.. but heres my opinion at least... I hope people read that line or two, as its important.. I am not a vet, I don't have absolute answers and I can only relay my perceptions of my own life and experiences.. as for the most part a lot of people do. Don't get me wrong, I love this website, and I treasure every opinion and bit of advice. I feel it has helped me in a lof of ways in dealing with my own feline problems and issues here at home
*Thanks* But the reader needs to actually read up and weigh the advice being given.. even in my own case I am surely not giveing the "best" advice possible.. but it is from a true desire to help and I keep trying to learn as I hope each pet owner does.

Silly Fwan! I never get bored of you! I just mean when one person writes like a 3 page long essay and doesn't use paragraphs... not sentences!

Don't feel self conscious, Fwan. I'm sitting here doing the same thing. Did I spell everything correctly in my post, how's my grammer? I really enjoy smilies and colors, so, is pink too bright of a color to write, how about blue?
So, should I start a new paragraph here? No smilies in this post, you'll notice.

You didn't have a "nothing really" box . I do have a peeve or two, but not one of those choices.

i voted for off topic replies, but i totally agree with the very last one too...
i am just astonished at how many threads start off about something nice and by the end people are arguing and bashing each others beliefs and half of it turns political
