Why is it that catnip, for some cats, makes them dopy, sleepy, and high, and with others, it makes them momentarily insane?

This morning, Simon was interested in catnip for the first time. I should've protected myself better when I felt him climbing up my hair to get to my hand. I put some out for Pengy, and of course that meant I had to put some out for each of the others. Until today, Simon had not ever been interested in it. But he's just 8 months, so I thought I had some time.

I thought wrong.

Esse ate it, as usual. Charlotte rolled around in it, and just laid there, stoned. Pie got hers as she laid in her basket, and performed her incredible imitation of an owl...blink, blink, blink...

Simon proceeded to literally climb up my braid (I have top-of-my-thigh length hair), perch on my shoulder, and claw at my arm to get his pinch. I removed him, got him into his own space, and gave him his 'nip. No problems, or so I thought. As I slipped into my heels, Simon tore past me, apparently being chased by ghost dogs or something. Fussing up a storm, he tore around the house, and then floooped down in the middle of the kitchen.

Car/house keys in hand, I leaned over the floooped form of this gorgeous but insane cat, and told him goodbye. His eyes flew open, he spotted my keys, grabbed them in his mouth, and took off again.

Now, I'm in heels, so I can't exactly chase him well. I kick off my heels and find him, but he's been in every room in the house in the 4 seconds it took me to get shoeless and find this wee beastie.

He was on the bed....I tore the bed apart, looking for keys. Nope, not there. I checked the hallway, the bathroom, back to the bedroom, behind the rocker, under the bed. Nope....into the kitchen, laundry room, back to the bathroom, the hallway, the living room. Call the office, explain I'll be there ASAP, and back to hunting.

30 minutes later, I discover them, tucked under the living room sofa. Simon was sleeping on the sofa by now, several pillows toppled on him.

So why is it that catnip makes my others stoned, and makes Simon behave as if I've just shot him full of speed????????????????

Sigh.

Michele

I've never been lucky enough to have stoned kitties. All of my cats that do react to it react like Simon. Usually there are big fights when they get wound up over a toy

Weird. I don't think I've ever seen a stoned kitty, lol. Max eats it or, if it's a catnip toy, attacks it. Baylee could care less still and she's 9 months old.

LOL. Simon acts so much like a dog. Maybe he thinks he is a dog and not a cat.
My cats woudln't dream of dragging my keys anywhere, stoned or not stoned.

LOL, well, it is Simon, after all. And no, I'm not sure he's not a dog...or a person, for that matter. LOLOL! He answered my cell phone again tonight, too, and then helped me make dinner again. He tries to help me sweep, but he keeps getting tangled with the bristles.

Yes, all the rest (aside from Pengy - she won't try it just yet) all get stoned and logy. Just there, staring or sleeping. Which was why it was such a startle to see Simon run around. I still can't believe he stole my keys...what a funny cat. I mean, right now, he's asleep in my briefcase (softsided), with his head on the fax. LOL.
