We have a Dell- I'd buy one again. We are no computer experts, so for this computer to hold up so well against the abuse of two computer-illiterates is pretty good. They seem to have good deals & good customer service, too.

Given your options, I would choose a Dell, but I am also a 100% Mac person!

I used to use a Mac's back in commercial art class but that was when they first came out.. nice for graphics. However, I enjoy the selection of windows based software thats available and am not sure I could give all of that up for a Mac.

My first computer back in 1992 was made by Packard Bell. Piece of crap. In 1995, I bought my first Gateway PC. It was good. In 2000, I bought my 2nd Gateway and still use the monitor from 1995 as I type!!! Since I'm a computer geek, I don't have to worry about tech support issues and am able to fix them on my own. I have not had any major problems with my computer and have not had to reformat or reinstall Windows 98 SE on my current computer.

I plan to purchase a new computer around Summertime because this 800 MHz one is about at it's limit for my needs. Personally, I never recommend a PC you buy at the store (Staples, Wal-Mart, etc). They may seem like a good bargain, but it is only if you don't have lots of money and don't plan to do much with the computer itself. I like being able to customize my computer down to every single component. Who knows, my next computer may come in 50 different boxes and I may build it myself.

I have heard good things about Dell. The IT guy at work recommends them. As far as Micron PC, we have those at work but they are inferior in my opinion.

Everybody i know who has bought a compaq has also had it break within the first year and no warranty will cover the amount of things wrong with them. First the power source burned out, then the fan motor dies, then the harddrive stopped spinning. Compaq likes to usethe worst components and slap it all together for maximum profit. Of all computers, do no buy a compaq.

I have a Dell 9200 notebook. I've had it for 2 years and haven't had many problems. However, i got the first generation version and the screen's button tends to get stuck.

No personal experience with Gateways but i do know that nobody buys them.
Try and get a nice Athlon 64 system or a mac.

Well, I'm not much help, I have an Averatec (and love it), but I've heard that Dells are very good - I would not get a Compaq, as I had a terrible experience with HP and they're apparently one and the same now.

I need to do that anyway before I install Sims 2 lol...
sounds like my old compaq i had back in 1997 -2001
we had to restore it so many times and keep shipping it off that i gave up on it gave it away and bought a gateway 'But" that could of been are fault i really never started using a computer till 1997 we had a webtv and bought a computer and had no idea what we were doing
but now i know this is not my fault this stinking monitor keeps going out

so now i have it on screen saver 24/7 afraid to shut it off cause it might not come back on

I just got a Mac Mini , i am very happy with it so far.
It's something to consider if you are thinking about changing you computer.

I also possess, a Dell laptop running XP , a Dell laptop running FreeBSD, a Dell desktop running XP , an iMac( Bondi Blue) , and a home made jobbie.

In terms of security the best is FreeBSD , but that's not for mere mortals!
Next is Apple OS X , and last but least is XP.

I love ym mac, and I must say, that if you're on a cable modem it's pretty plug and play by that standpoint. HP makes a point of being osx compatible as far as printers go, and my camera was recognized upon connection. Personally, I don't think you could beat it for what it comes with off hand- retailing at $500, but I got a keyboard and a mouse as well as a RAM upgrade- Came to just under $700 with 2 day express shipping.. Provided you have your own monitor to plug in to. It will allow for PC monitor hookup

Except part of the problem was the monitor is dying.

At least with a PC you want to be sure the monitor AND the video card can BOTH display the same resolution. It does no good to get a monitor that only supports 1024x resolution yet your video card goes upto 1680x.. and the refresh rate matters in the higher resolutions.. faster is better? And don't forget the pixels matter.. so dots per inch ...I think.. so many things computer makers try to "screw" you on without you knowing till its to late. Check out every detail and if your lucky you might actually find a good deal on something. -- Myself.. I usually find out after what I "should" have gotten instead. :p
