Sorry, Rhonda, i'm not going to be much help, as I'm a Mac girl myself!

When I bought my parents' PC though, I bought a lesser known brand, but from a reputable (sp?) store with good guarantees! It was cheaper, came with all the peripherals and came with a long guarantee that the store will fix any problems!

Good luck with buying a new computer and I hope others will be more helpful than me!

I have had Gateway in the past and now I would go with Dell I think, however I have not gone to each site and "built" a system or seen what deals they have to offer. I was not impressed with Gateways support or lack of it. If you do not get something directly from them, you can not get even basic help with getting it to work with their PC that in my mind.. SHOULD work with the "average" PC component I might go pick up to add into the system. Their response.. "Sorry sir, we did not test that item with that configuriation and we cannot support third party products..." bleh bleh! So for that alone.. I think Dell might be better, but they might have the same policy for all I know.

I built my own from www.newegg.com in parts and put it together. You always take the risk that something wont work and you have to send it back and pay shipping.. or it wont be "perfect" or you will screw up when putting it together. I ended up with AMD 64 bit Athlon 3000+, with 1 gig of Ram for a reasonable price after using parts from my old system to finish off the basics like cd burner and floppy drive and harddrive and video card etc. The motherboard they sent was not "new" either, so with its 3 year warrenty apparently 2 years had gone by and it was as covered anymore, although I did not have problems with the one I choose. I skimpped on the quality of the RAM and I regret it.. I also should have better cooling then the "stock" heatsink... but someone loaned me the money to upgrade so I took what I was able to get. Still paying that off.. uggg, heh. Might as well have used gateway or dell.
But.. at least the computer is one I don't mind using, and if windows ever really goes 64 bit I will be at least capiable hopefully.. even though by then this PC will be under powered again.

Macs are great, but I do think it really depends on what you want to do with it. Software you can either run the general Mac OS (Operating System) versions such as AppleWorks (This is equivalent to Microsoft Works, with pretty simple Word Processing, Database, Spreadsheet etc)

You can also run Microsoft Office on a Mac if you buy the software. I don't use Office on my Mac (at present) as I don't have much need for it.

You can attach almost anything to the general programmes of the Mac eg Digital Camera to iPhoto and Digital Video camera to iMovie. The problems come if you want to use a more advanced programme eg Adobe Premiere for film - this can only be easily accessed (without massive manual configuring) using a Sony or Canon camera

All in all though, most printers and scanners etc will connect fine, but I tend to stick with Hewlett Packard as I know these to be compatible.

There is also the problem of a lot of companies eg ISP that don't offer software for certain versions of the operating system, so again, it's back to manual configuration. (could be a UK thing though?!)

Although Macs are (IMO) great computers, I can imagine that you already have a lot of Microsoft software that would become negligible if you were to buy a Mac.

I hope that makes a bit of sense! If you need any more info, just give me a shout and i'll see what I can do!

Personally, if I were to buy a new computer I would buy a Dell... I have a compaq now and I've formatted it so many times it no longer has the original compaq software... When I get my income tax back I think one of the things I"m gonna do is buy more memory and a larger hard drive... As a matter of fact, I had a dream last night that my computer got a virus so I think I'm gonna spend the day backing up my stuff and possibly formatting my hard drive again... I need to do that anyway before I install Sims 2 lol...

I voted for Dell! I am an IT manager and we have over 360 Dell laptops and about the same PC's - and while we do have a problem or two here and there (who dosen't!) - the Dell's have proved to be good overall. My last home purchase was also a Dell.

My dad got a Compaq for Christmas. He already had to send back the tower to get the hard drive replaced. I vote for Dell.

I voted for dell.. I would not get a gateway. Compaq's imo are iffy. Dell may be the best of your choices as far as reliability goes. I just bought a toshiba laptop though, a little pricier than dell but i have a personal vendetta against dell so I didn't care. I like my toshiba.

I have a Gateway now and I've had tons of problems with it and I've only had it about 18 months. Within the first 6-7 months it was in for service 3 times and the monitor has been replaced 4 times between then and now. Their answer for everything is to format the hard drive. My monitor wouldn't come on and they didn't even want to look at the monitor all they did was reformat the hard drive and give it back. It wasn't even the same as when I bought it when I got it back. When I got it back they did something to it and I had to have passwords for everything (which I did not want or have prior) and called the tech support and they caused the system to crash and had to take it back to get if fixed again. It took over a year to discover the problem was a video card, even then they just sent me the part and said I have to put it in myself (after paying an extra $200.00 for the extended warranty). It's no big deal to put it in though. My Dad went to school to fix computers so he did it for me. I will NEVER EVER buy another one!!!

I just bought my parent a Sony and theirs seem to work great. Prior to that they had a HP and it had it's share of problems. I've also had Packard Bell computers and they were OK. My Grandma has a Compaq and it's pretty touchy. She doesn't do anything but play games on it and still has problems.

I've got three - a desktop from Siemens/Fujitsu, bought in 1997, and only used for work (no Internet connection, so nobody can hack it and gain access to exam texts), a Compaq notebook (b&w, extremely s---l---o---w), bought in 1993, and now used as an electronic dictionary, and a Samsung notebook, 2002 vintage, which I use to go online. I really can't complain about any of them. I've had some trouble with the Samsung, but only because Jamie puked on it, and the saliva and grass got under the keyboard, and shorted it out.

I have not had a problem with my Dell in the 3 years that I've owned it. When I had a Compaq on the other hand... let's just say I had their tech support # memorized and even spoke with some of the same tech support guys numerous times!

I sort of misread the question, and voted for Gateway, because that's the computer I have now. If I was to purchase a new one, or "if I had known then what I know now" I would definately have a Dell.
