Hi to all from Jakarta, Indonesia, and the United Nations system.

A couple of weeks ago, a street kitten, about 4 weeks old, insisted that I take her home. She thrived for a couple of days - until I accidentally stepped on her. She twisted away so my full weight did not land on her, but she immediately went into shock. We took her to the only 24-hour vet in town, who gave her fluids and a coagulent to stop any internal bleeding. She was in a coma for a couple of days, but gradually came out of it - and she has not been the same since.

The problem is, I think, that she has lost her sense of smell - most cats would shy away very quickly from a pungent odor like strong menthol (Vick's), but she just sits there. And probably because she can't smell, she's not eating, except for the forced feeding we're doing - but this is unsustainable, and she's losing weight. We're getting about 20 cc of liquified ScienceDiet for kittens into her a day, and cramming a little chicken or fish down her as well.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I'd be grateful. I've already noted, from previous threads, that Periaction or Vitacal may be good, and I'll look for these here - but I'm not that optimistic I'll find them; and I have the recipe for kitten glop.

Many thanks! Len

You might try heating up some canned wet food for kittens. I know it has worked in cases where they have lost smell due to an infection. I hope she is okay!!

She's breathing normally, but occasionally snuffles (no sneeze) as if trying to clear something out from her nose. There's no nasal discharge at all. And even with a flashlight (sorry, torch to you Brits
), I can't see anything up her nose (would be hard, anyway - those nostrils are small
).

The vet gave me an antibiotic for the initial injury, which I stopped after a week. Should I restart this now? If it's viral, of course, the antibiotics won't work. In a way, I wish there was discharge - it's be easier to figure out!! Getting good advice here in Jakarta is pretty difficult, so appreciate any and all through the forum.
