We have 5 cats that have lived with each other for quite some time now. Most are siblings, though not all from the same litter, and have always gotten along just fine. The 3 males were fixed a while back, and we just got the 2 females fixed yesterday. Today everyone is on edge, hissing, growling, and even attacking each other. We have also had a few cases of spraying today, a problem we never ever had before. Most of the fights seem to be started by one of the females, though not all. Is this a reaction to the surgery, where the female feels she is injured and is putting up a strong front to get the rest away from her? At first this is what I was thinking, however when one of the cats meows, the more aggressive female searches them out looking for a fight. Any ideas?

You need to neutralize the scents on all the cats. You can do that by either dusting all the cats with brewer's yeast and brushing them all, or taking vanilla extract and putting it under their chins, between their shoulders and on the base of their tails- just a tiny bit several times a day. The cats are reacting like they are because the ones just in from the vet don't smell the same, so they are treated as intruders, they smell like drugs, stress and any other scent they managed to pick up while at the vet-

Well things haven't really changed anything. Things were starting to get better over the weekend, though today things defiantly took a step backward. The random spraying stopped just as fast as it started, but the aggressiveness is defiantly up and is coming from the females. The males have now taken to cowering in the corners and not moving. They will occasionally come out to eat, though they are very nervous about it. The females seem to be going through mood swings, one min. they are sleep curled up right next to each other and grooming each other, the next they are fighting each other and then anyone else that gets in their way. None of the cats have shown aggression towards my wife or me. They may hiss, but it's usually just once, and then they remember who we are and very willing to let us pet them and be close to them. We are calling the vet tomorrow, but any other advice to help us get by till then would be great.

The Feliway Comfort Zone Room Diffusers will help out as well. You can find them at local pet supply stores or on the internet

Dunno who runs it, but thats the cheapest place I found so far and just ordered some even after adding in the shipping. Hopefully they will help with KC and Buddy.

You're right! It is even cheaper than the prices you get when you go to Farnan pets website:-).

One quick note - they offer 3 shipping options - the default is UPS Ground. The third option listed is USPS priority - it is the cheapest of the three options offered.

Kathryn
(who just ordered a refill - the actual diffusers are back ordered to mid March right now)
