I just have to post about how happy I am that things are going to get back to normal, with even stricter proceedured for maintaining the health of the cats.

The shelter where I volunteer has been dealing with ringworm for months now. It actually became an epidemic. 70% of the cats at the shelter had it, foster cats caught it, and almost a hundred animals had to be put to sleep or died from complications of it. No new cats were allowed to be brought into the shelter in the past two months, and all infected cats were moved to a separate facility. Instead of having 150 cats at the shelter, we have 50.

Communication problems are huge at the shelter, but the people in charge finally decided enough is enough, and are taking steps to stop it and get cats back into the shelter.

They've thrown away thousands of dollars of cat trees, scratching posts and wicker baskets. The only thing allowed right now is anything that can be bleached or washed in the washing machine.

They're tearing the sisal off of the two story cat tree and are going to find something disposible or bleachable instead. It won't be as pretty as it was, but it won't harbor any fungus.

They're going to be moving the remaining cats into one room, and have hired professionals to decontaminate the rooms. All of the cats will be getting medicated baths before being moved into the clean rooms.

All of the ductwork is being cleaned, and a UV filter is being added to the intake and outtake areas on the roof.

Adoption hours are being moved from the days we offer the spay and neuter program, to keep people who might have things on their hand and clothes from entering the cat area.

Once this is done, the recovered cats are coming back to the shelter, along with new fosters. All will be given baths and a full exam before being reintroduced to the healthy cats.

YAY!!!!!!!! In about a month we'l;l be back to full capacity, and hopefully will be sending even more healthy cats home!!!! Whoo-hoo!
