Hi

I took my 6 month old kitten to the vets 2 days ago as she had been slowly going off her food and being subdued and then she stopped eating for 24 hours altogether.

The vet said she had a temperature but couldn't find anything specifically wrong - although commented her abdomen was tense.

He then asked - almost as an afterthought - has she been toileting ok. I said that she had, although it is like bullets and she usually goes every morning and she hadn't gone that morning (so hadn't been for 36 hrs). He decided to give her an injection, an enema and put her on 2 different sorts of tablets. Synulox (?) and another.

She came home, went to the toilet and ate a whole packet of food!! She has continued to eat (so far) but hasnt been to the toilet since (36 hours ago was the last time).

Do you think she is susceptible to constipation and if so is there a food I can give her to loosen her stools? I know you all will recommend tinned pumpkin but I've never seen that in the shops in the UK - we dont eat it much!

Is there anything else? Please help!

Other ways to introduce fiber:

Cooked and mashed green beans-

Cooked yams (sweet potatos)

loose catnip (organic) Feed about a teaspoon of one of these per servings. Make sure the cat is drinking water as well. unflavored pedialyte works also. If you have any type of canola oil or safflower oil, you can add a bit to her food. Also feed her a variety of wet and dry food, not just dry.

Thanks Hissy.

The only thing is, I've never heard of these oils. Also what is pedialyte? I wonder if we call these things something different in the UK?

Sorry!!

You can also use a product called Laxatone - a paste that helps with both hairballs and/or constipationg (beef flavored as I recall).

I've used slippery elm bark syrup with Patrick, the recipe can be found at Tanya's site feline crf dot org under their section on holistic treatments and/or their section on constipation.

You can also try using a higher fiber dry food - one that says it is formulated for hairballs will be higher in fiber, there are several brands on the market that have a specific formula for this, as well as increasing the amount of wet food (has a higher moisture content, and lack of enough liquids contributes to constipation).

I have a similar problem with my 7 month old kitten - she can't poop. I picked up some Laxatone for her today, but can't get her to take it. I tried putting it on her nose, but all she did was shake her head around until it was all over her face. Now her fur is all sticky and she won't let me clean it. She is a very stubborn cat Any ideas on how else can I get her to take the medicine? Thank you!

Try very gently placing some of the dose directly on her lips (smear it gently so she will have to lick it off) or directly on her tongue (watch out you don't get accidentally nipped), and only put part of the dose so she won't gag on it.

That is what I'd try.
