I have made mention that we are closing on a house in about a week now and will begin moving shortly after.
I have talked about Socks before. He is our neighbors outside cat.The neighbors are 2 guys that are about 40 that are roomates. Now both have girlfriends and are rarely home. They do love Socks and take good care of him. One of them comes home to feed him everyday and they even take him to the vet once a month to be bathed, etc. They will occasionally call me if they are not going to be around to ask me to feed him. He is well taken care of in every manner, except that he doesn't get much company from them.
I have started feeding him a little wet food and sitting with him in the mornings. He won't let me pick him up, but if I sit down with him he will climb in my lap and sit there forever if I would let him. He runs to my car when I get home. I haven't figured out if it's for the wet food or because I pet him. But the thing is, I feel awful about moving away. I know Socks will still get fed, but since he is so used to me being around, will he miss me?

The thought crossed my mind to ask if I could take him with me. But I know my bf, err fiance (still getting used to that!
) doesn't want another cat, and Socks is an outside cat. I do not want to have an outside cat because I would worry way too much about him being safe. One thing that has been on my mind though... one of the guys in engaged and will surely be moving soon. I don't know why they don't take Socks to his fiance's house, so I am just assuming that maybe he can't live there. I need to talk to them about their plans later, because if Socks was going to end up homeless I would find a way to take him in or find him a home personally. This is a sweet cat and he deserves someone to love him.

I guess this is just something that has been on my mind. I never intended to become "attached" to Socks, but I don't think it was my decision

tanya i would definitly ask the guys what there plans for Socks are and leave a contact number in case Socks should need a home later.

theres a good chance that he'll adapt to be being an indoor/outdoor kitty or maybe indoor with enough stimulation. if ferals can do it so can Socks.

it wouldnt hurt to ask, just make it clear you know he is well loved and cared for but say you've grown to love him.

Whoever lives where you are not might not be a nice cat person or they might.. you could try leaving a note there mentioning to the new owners/renters that there is a very nice cat that visits to say hello and has been a great friend to you for a long time now. If they wouldn't mind saying hi and being kind to him that would be a great comfort to your soul. .. They might be the sort of person who is open to that request and maybe they will find as much comfort in him as you did.

Other then that.. talking to the other people who's cat it is.. is a great idea. Hopefully they have plans to take him with them when they move since it does sound like they care by taking him to the vet and giving him as much of a home as he seems to want.

Good luck with him and the move for yourself as well!

Well we have been in the new place for 2 and 1/2 months. The guys (my old neighbors) assured me Socks would be taken of. I miss the little guy so much though. It's weird because honestly there are days I don't think about him, but then there are days, like today, where I feel tremendously worried about him. I was passing by the old apartments a couple of weeks ago and thought I would give one of the guys a call to check in on them and Socks, I left a message though and no one has called me back. I keep getting this bad feeling that maybe something happened to Socks and that's why they haven't called back.
I thought about stopping in the complex to check on Socks myself. He was always very easy to find, but I worry if that would make it more difficult to deal with for him and me.
Am I just being silly?

Oh not at all. I would do the same exact thing. People may think I am weird but I wouldn't care. You care about him and that is great. If you run into those guys who own Socks, make sure you keep mentioning him and tell them again that you want him if they cannot keep him anymore. Stress how much you miss him and that you miss sitting and letting him jump up and sleep on your lap and that he would do that all day if you let him. Maybe they will think, 'hey I dont spend much time with him, I didn't even know he would do that' and see that you would give him a better home.
