I'm in TX! Anyone have any questions? I'm at a friend's Bar Mitzvah. The service is already over, and the party is in a couple hours! Yay! Even two states away, I have to hang out with TCS! I love you guys....
Anyways, I only have a few sad things to say. I need some advice. I'm staying with some friends who are feeding a stray cat, whom they have named Pinky. They've been really nice to him, but he's not in good shape. He's white with blue eyes, most likely meaning deafness. He's REALLY dirty. His feet are dark yellow with urine. He has a bloody nose from fighting, and mocus all over.
I'm only here till tomorow. What can I do for him?

Convience them to take him to a no kill shelter? It sounds like he is having a rough life like so many others
Makes me wish I had unlimited land and money and was able to just take in all the world's homeless animals.

We all wish that.....

I DID suggest that...

He has FIV, so he is unadoptable...

*sigh* I want him to be mine...

He's so SWEET! He purrs, and rubs up against me, follows me...

I only wish my cats were that outgoing, as much as I love them.

Well, it's obvious that your friends care for the poor cat. Maybe you can convince them to catch him and bring him to a vet. You can contribute some money for the expense. Pinky needs help asap!

Texas seems to have a very bad problem with pet over population, especially in some areas. Last year I went to Houston and took the wrong turn and ended up in a very bad area near downtown (HOLY CRAP
). There were animals all over, there were two very big, very cute puppies that looked like mastiffs or something like that, they were laying in the middle of the street, I think they were dead. They didn't look like they were hit by cars or shot or anything, but I think they were poisoned. All I know is I couldn't get out in that area to check on them. We saw a lot of dogs all over and some cats too, I felt so bad for the animals because I knew the people in that area could hardly feed themselves, let alone the animals, I knew they couldn't afford vet care either.
Anyway, getting to the point. There are no-kill shelters that will take FIV and FeLV positive cats. Its not a death sentence. There are even owners that have FIV+ cats living with FIV- cats and the cats are great. Then there are the owners that own strictly FIV+ cats. I would tell them to check into local no-kill shelters, it MUST be no-kill, other shelters won't give Pinkey a chance. Even ask vets, a handful adopt out needy animals, some might have clients who will take FIV+ cats. One thing is for sure, Pinkey noeds a home. White cats are very easy for preditors to pick out because they have no camoflage (brown tabbies have excellent camo), and deaf cats can't hear predators coming, so outside is very dangerous for the kitty.

I agree. I'm really glad that Pinky is nutured. I'm really upset you had to go through that.
I want to take Pinky home with me.
He's such a sweetie, my heart skips a beat thinking he doesn't even have a mommy. I'll talk it over with my friends before I leave tomorow.

Thanks, Sam! I already cleaned his feet with wipes, and brushed him. I'm coming home soon.

Wow...do you know what part of downtown you were in? What buildings you were near? We have some homeless people that live underneath the Pierce-Elevated and the pets around there are theirs....we do have a over population problem. It's a shame. I live less than 2 miles from downtown in the Heights...the City takes pets that are roaming very quickly here...don't know why it is different just 3-4 miles away...

I don't know exactly where we were, we were trying to get to the George R. Brown Center and got off one exit too early. I remember there was a college somewhere near there and I just kept thinking "why would a college be in THIS neighborhood!" I just looked at a map and Milam and Fannin streets sound familar, that is near South Texas College of Law, does that sound like a neighborhood I might have been in? The houses were all falling apart and the area was very dirty. I'm from Nebraska and we just don't see things like that here so it was an eye opener.

You were in the Southeast part of downtown, probably near MinuteMaid park (where the Houston Astros play)-the area is pretty bad, but they are working on making the area near George R. Brown sorta like Central Park in New York. Downtown has actually (in itself) gotten better in the last 10 years...it's funny you say that about the college. My school (University of Houston-Downtown) is actually in the heart of downtown. I love it there--the people are so awesome!! My school is on the east side, not too too far from Minute Maid Park. It's funny how people react when you don't live in the same city. I am just use to it
But, don't worry---I still wouldn't walk downtown at night by myself (atleast in that area). There are parts of downtown you can just run around and have a grand ole' time, especially after a party!
