No, not Simon. Although.....naw.

I was whistling at some birds the other day, as they perched outside in the lemon tree. Chirping and whistling. I'm not a good whistler, but whatever. I noticed that all of the visible cats were upset...anxious, looking around. Simon was running around, looking and crying.

I wasn't at all sure it was the whistling, but thought it might be. Later that day, I went into the bedroom, and all the cats were there. And so I whistled again...and I kid you not, Pie fled - as fast as she could, she tore out of the room. Charlotte leapt from her perch, and bailed, as well. Esse walked as fast as she ever goes right out of the room. Simon screamed and took off...and Pengy, despite me sitting right there, left the tube and hid under the bed.

ROFL!!!!

What the heck happened there? I really was surprised - Esse doesn't give up the bed for anyone (including me). It cracked me up...and no, I'm not going to do it again, as it seems to alarm the fuzzbutts, but still...made me laugh.

Do any of your cats have such an aversion to whistling, or am I truly that bad a whistler?

Best-
Michele

I'm afraid you might be a bad whistler Michele! Lol... I'm just kidding. But I did just start whistling and Max's ears perked up and he looked around with his eyes real wide. When I kept doing it and looking at him he got up and made his way over here and is now lying across my arm. I guess he thought I was calling him?

When whistling in my house - Hans will just stand there frozen, L.S. will take off running, and Merlin will practically stick his head in your mouth.

(My favourite is the little dog we used to dog-sit when my mom's friend went on vacation. Whenever my mom would whistle, Sasha would crawl into her lap, lay down, and start howling at the top her lungs. It was so cute!)

It upsets Winnie too. I think maybe it upsets them because their hearing is much more sensitive than ours.

I would suspect that there are harmonics in the whistling that are beyond our hearing range but that are within the advanced hearing sensitivity of a cat. I can't whistle so haven't tried this, but I do know that there are many musical instruments like a flute, fife or recorder that will drive the cats crazy and they will wander around making little strange meows, or tear around the house, or roll around on the floor. I have always thought it must affect them the same way that scraping fingernails on a chalkboard or something similar does for us.

My goodness I hope not! My hubby and I whistle all the time to the birds, and so do 4 of our 11 parrots.

I tried whistling and although they are in a diffrent room, they don't apparently care very much if at all.
