How did your cat(s) get their name(s)? I've noticed so many interesting kitty names on this board; it'd be fun to know their origins!
My cat, Eponine, was named after my favorite character in the book/Broadway show Les Miserables.
I look forward to seeing your answers!

Have a great one,
Amy

Shelby was named after the city where I got her.....Shelbyville.

All the others.......the names just kinda came to me as I looked at them for a few days.....and the names seemed to fit.

Well...

about 14 years ago my brother (who is 8 years older than me) had been at my dad's shop and came home with a cat. He had found him under a shopping cart outside of Toys R Us (which is right next to my dad's store). So, he brought the kitty home, we got him all cleaned up, fixed up, and eventually introduced him to our other furry family members (we had another cat named Pussywillow who was around before I was born - she lived to be 22 btw - and a sheltie named Gypsy). I was 8 years old at the time and was SO excited about the new kitty! I wanted to name him so desparately that the next time my mom and I were at a bookstore I used my allowance to buy a cat name book. I read through the whole thing and in that book was the name Waffle. I, of course, fell in love with the name and when I got home I told Johnny (my bro) that I wanted to name the kitty. He wouldn't let me though, he insisted that since he found it he got to name it (and he thought Waffle was a goofy name anyway), so he named it Oliver (since it had been an orphan that nobody wanted - harhar). Being 8 years old I was really bummed out that I couldn't name it and annoyed that he kept picking on me about the name Waffle so I swore to him that day that when I had my very first kitty on my own it's name would be Waffle. Well, 12 years later I found my Waffle at the Daytona Beach Humane Society, and she was a perfect fit for the name. I just knew she was "my Waffle."

So, moral of the story, I always keep my word.

Loving my beautiful baby girl
When Sierra and I met, that was just her name, never any question at all. I had known for quite some time that Sierra would be my first daughter's name, and so it became.

When I got Princess she was 7 weeks old and lived with an SPCA foster family and they called her Genavive but I just couldn't bring myself to call her that. The day I brought her home (Father's day) we were having my Grandparents over for dinner and I couldn't think what to name her. My Grandma said I should name her Princess. The reason was everyone use to call me the Queen when I was younger and since I was the Queen my kitty should be Princess. Princess is a perfect name for her because she thinks she is a little Princess.

Patsy was named by her foster mom from the rescue group. She told me that she named her Patsy after one of her relatives because Patsy was really sweet and easy going just like her relative. She had been called Patsy for 2 months already and was used to the name so I just let her keep it. Patsy went through so much (she was abused then abandoned) in such a short time I didn't want to make it any harder on her then necessary.

Sweetie was a feral cat that my mom was working with. Even though she was feral she was still friendly so my Mom just called her Sweetie. Since she now allows us to pet her she fits the name even better.

George was a stray that adopted us. He showed up one day when my Dad was working in the garden and never left. My Dad called him George once and it just stuck.

Blackie was also a feral that just showed up one day. Her name is pretty self explanitory.

Milky is his name,
why Milky? As you can see in the picture, (My Siggy) it´s totally white,
so we inspirade from the “Milky Wayâ€, we loved, because he´s friendly, cute and gently, his little bio begin when we are looking (after our wedding) for a cat in loving memory of “Misho†(RIP
) a cat who lived (It was equal to Milky coat) with my wife six years ago and die,
well finally we found “Milky"

Cheers!

we didnt really know what to call him when we first got him untill the day later.
We had a friend over and she started playing with him and he went wild like a tornado. the chewed up all the toilet paper but we didnt want him to be "devil" so we decided to name him Teufel which means devil in german.
He does respond to it only when he is feeling evil like last night at 2 am he broke his new cat tree

But we call him gatto. because bf started liking the name Ghetto Gatto
and he just got used to it

I got Hoshi and BabyGirl from a woman at a gas station (it was fate!).
Hoshi is a tortie who has a lovely orange stripe down one side of her nose. Her name was "star" when I got her, but I wanted to name her my own, so I looked up the name for "star" in Japanese and it was Hoshi. And it fits her so well.
My 16 yr old sister named BabyGirl. That is what Jona calls all female animals. But it also suited her very well and now I couldn't see either one of them being called any different.

I voted for character, but Ivo was a name on an art poster my neighbor has hanging in his apartment.

edit-I forgot to add, the Catholic Church recognizes a Saint Ivo, who is the patron saint of abandoned and orphaned children. It's a fitting name, since my Ivo was a stray when she adopted me.

It took 3 days for me to name Oliver. I was staring into his olive green eyes and said out loud "Oliver!"

Tripod was named by one of the 3 guys at my work who found him...for obvious reasons. I considered "Lionel" (after the train set) because he purrs so loudly, but my BF and friends talked me into keeping Tripod his name.

Trent was named after Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, because when he played he threw himself around on the floor like Trent Reznor does on stage. So while he was named after an artist, it really just fit.

Ophelia was officially named after the character in Shakespeare's Hamlet, but it wasn't really that simple. We spent two days talking about names for her and nothing seemed to fit. Finally I just started naming off female characters from literature that I remembered (being an English major it wasn't too hard to come up with quite a few), and when I said Ophelia Earl said, "That's it!" It was the only one out of probably 100 names we had both come up with that fit her.

I love that! I'm a Trent Reznor fan, so it's funny to read how your kitty got his name.

Chloe was a name we liked. It seemed very feminine; when we got Chloe she was very shy and timid. Now it's a whole other story -
- but the name still suits her well. We almost named her Amber because she has orangey stripes on her legs and belly.

Calamity Jane (CJ) - She was such a bully to her little siblings (even though she was the runt), so we named he Calamity Jane, after the western movie gal, Calamity Jane.

Wild Bill (Billy) - We wanted CJ's name to go with his, and Wild Bill is an old western name, and he IS wild, so, it just kinda fit.

Topaz (feral) - that's just it.... she is white and orange, like a Topaz gem.

Tri-Bi (feral) - Okay.... this is an interesting story. When Tri-Bi first started coming around, she was kind of "flakey." She was so cautious around us, and acted all lovable one moment, and then scared stiff the next. We were thinking this cat had some kind of mental disorder. Turns out, it appears she used to be kicked and hit and abused a lot. But the name stuck. So, exactly what DOES Tri-Bi mean? Tricolored Bipolar!

CJ is Casey Jones, a Grateful Dead song -- my favorite band. Our black bear hamster, Peter, is named after the Ghostbuster, Peter Venkman. Ghostbusters was his favorite show growing up and Pete was his favorite character. Also, he had a teddy bear he had named Pete the Bear and since Peter was a black bear hamster, it just fit.

Gandalf and Samwise were both named after characters in Lord of the Rings. Which is much better than what I named my first cat, I named her Bubbles after Michael Jackson's chimp.
I got her around the same time Thriller came out.
