Two days ago, Saladina gave me a scare by finding the kitchen door to the garage open and Saladina walking out through it. I caught her quickly and closed the door. I just assumed "Oh, somebody left the door open, and she found it."

Today, I have just witnessed the incredible. She went to the door, she stood up on a box that sits next to the door. From the box she stands up in her hind legs, and starts with her paws to twist the doorknob until the door opened and she was about to come out through the door!

At that point I come running and close the door, and put the lock to it. And just sit..... sit, staring at Saladina, and ask her if she's sure she ain't the next step in feline evolution.

I am still having a hard time believing she managed to learn how to use a doorknob..... It just makes me laugh so hard.

I am starting to think soon enough we will have to put a lock in the upper part of the door. What makes me laugh so much, is that that was what my parents had to do when I was a 2 year old and learned to open the door and started trying to get out just like Saladina.

Amazing. I hope she has a ID chip incase she finds her way out. Maybe its time to add deadbolts to all the doors and shhh, dont tell her the windows open too.

It is totally possible. My cat HAMMIE opens doors. Namely the door to the bathroom, if I ever put him out into the hallway while attempting to get ready for work!!! He must have watched me open doors or something because he uses both paws and works the doorknob til the door opens.

So maybe I could teach him how to flush a toilet...

Well, none of my cats have chips.... I really need to consider it, and look into wether shelters around here (the few shelters that exist) check for them. But, the deadbolts will go in if she goes on with this.

CoolCat, you think I could take her with me when I take mine, so she takes her Drivers license test?

My friends had a kitty who could UNLOCK and open the front door if there was something for him to stand on. Dice was a pretty smart kitty.
And imagine our surprise coming back to their place finding the front door wide open, and nothing missing but two cats...

Did your kitty do something like this?

This was Thomas a couple of months ago (he was almost 5 months old here) when he had to be quaranteened in my bedroom for a couple of days so I could make sure he was pooping ok. He hated being away from the other kitties and he kept trying to get out. In this picture, he actually had the doorknob turning and I think if I hadn't been in the room with him......the little stinker would have escaped.

Princess is my escape artist. She can open any door, it doesn't matter if they're locked or even deadbolted. She did the same thing your kitty did, except she waited until I was at work to let herself out. I came home and freaked out. My first thought, after getting the cats back inside, was did someone break in. I knew that was impossible because the door was in the kitchen and just went to the garage.

A couple days later I was sitting at my desk and could see down the hall to the door and Princess just happend to open the door again. Atleast I knew how she did it after that. She just stood on her hind legs and reached up to the lock and turned it. The hit the doorknob enough to release it so she could grab the bootom of the door an pull it open.

I ended up putting lift latches at the top of all the doors that I didn't need to come and go from the house. On the front door I put a security screen door and different locks that she can't seem to open. Give her time and she will probably figure those out to.

Squirt has tried opening doors with his paws wrapped around the knob like that, but I guess he hasn't been persistent enough to make it work. Cats truly are amazing creatures.
