The Dilbert home page came out with D.U.H a few months ago, Dilbert's Ultimate House. In the DUH house, there was a cat room to mimic the bathroom. This got me thinking: given that so many people own cats, why aren't more homebuilders at least incorporating little nooks or other such places into the homes where you could put the catbox??!! It's tough to find a good spot for it, where it won't be in the way. So, just for fun let's imagine . . . . you are building your own home and have unlimited funds and will devote a room in the house to the CAT(S). What would your cat rooms look like? Would there be an outdoor component?

What a great idea! My dream cat room would have the cat box nooks and bay windows with sunning perches. If it was downstairs, I would like an enclosed play area for indoor/outdoor fun that didn't need to be supervised. And since the funds are unlimited, hey, why not go for a fountain for continual fresh water, and an extra bay window with a small garden of wheatgrass & catnip! Kitty bunk beds and a tree house would be included; also a place for me to sit & read or crochet while I hang out with the kids. What other ideas are out there?

I would like to have ledges around all the rooms about 8 inches below the ceiling so the cats can travel from room to room without using the floors. Of course there would have to be some tunnels or holes above doors etc for that to work and some ramps up to them on some walls and such.. saw some house on tv where a person built something like that and had a bunch of cats. They seemed to enjoy it.

Dude!!!

My cat house would be a room full of cat climbing furniture with levels that reach the cieling and an exit to an out door area with trees for my cats to climb but it would be completely enclosed because my cats are indoor cats. I would also have a catnip garden for them and a big fluffy cat bed inside. Outside I would have a cat hammock so they could sleep in the sun because I always come home to find a cat napping in a window seal. It would be a cat's paradise. If I ever win a million
...I'm definitely making a cat room...but then there's the fear that my cats would never leave the room because they love it so much. I'd be visiting my cats in their room instead of them visiting me in mine.

In my cat room, the lower 4 feet of the walls would be covered in twine; kind of like 'wainscotting'. I would also have a few scattered indents in the floor about 1/2 foot deep, lined with something soft & comfy so my babies could be able to curl up in any one of them (kind of like a floor with built in cat beds). In one of the walls, I would have a built in aquarium, so they can stare at the fish. Cat palaces, trees, and nooks & crannies would be in abundance, as well as string & ribbon to play with whenever they wished. I would also have a seperate smaller room conected to this one complete with litter boxes that self cleaned as soon as the cat completely stepped out of the litter box. I'd also have (as mentioned above) a little water fountain with fresh water.

!! Hey, you know, when we were hunting for apartments we almost got one that would have been perfect for the cats, bt we decided to save $40/month and get one that's fine for the humans
they'd have had their own room (This place had a HUUUGE closet in the spare bedroom. we wouould have had one of the cat gyms in there, and the bathroom actually had a place next to the toilet for a litter box.

another one had an actual nook that would have fit 2 litter boxes, and been inexpensive, but the sq. footage was small. In the end we are going to have the in the kitchen nook until we can find a better place. The apartment we opted for was not designed for the potty habits of cats.
