As you all know I have been calling all over TN to try and get my ferrals spayed/neutered. Memphis Animal Rescue called me back yesterday. They dont take any "customers" outside Shelby County (Im in Henderson).

The woman was very sympathetic to my needs, but unfortunately there was nothing she could do. Did give me a # of a mobile Spay Station...Ive already called and left a message there.

The reason for this post is that while I was talking to her, she said that they have been having problems in this area with the use of kittens in dog fighting. You are all so cat savy, Im certain you have most likely heard of this before but to me it was such a shocker. I dont know what Im going to do with my kittens that need a home now. If you charge its less likely they will find a home, and if you dont they may end up in the hands of one of these dog fight trainers. OMG, I just cant believe this !!

Oh yeah, kittens are used quite often to make pit bulls crazy prior to fighting. kittens and baby bunnies I will not go into what they do to the poor things
They also are used to feed large snakes.

Sad fact of life, and animal control does everything possible to stop it. It is, obviously, illegal, but dog fighting is illegal and the....(I don't even know a bad enough word for those people!!)...who do that don't care.

If there is ANY adoption fee, you will likely not hear from those who want the kittens for bad ends...sale to labs for testing, use in dog fight training, or "personal"
uses. Putting money down on anything means it is someone of "value" to the people who bring it home, as sad as even that is. Even if it's only $10-15. And use an adoption contract, and make sure it's OK to contact their vet and landlord if they rent. It is sad the amount of leg work one has to do to ensure they end up in (hopefully) a good home, but doing that will save them from a definite bad place.

Yes, isn't it sickening!! And the dogs don't fare much better... And can you imagine what happens to children growing up in that environment..............But, now there are humane and rescue societies, and certainly things must be much improved than they were 20 years ago, so we must keep looking forward, and do what we can to make certain that these treasures of life, those poor, defenseless kittens are rescued and protected!! Thank you for sharing what must have been so difficult to write....Susan

Have you found any rescues in your area? I was actually talking to my rescue coordinator this evening about your situation, and she said that any good rescue should be more than willing to help you out based on what you and I talked about previously. I've been wondering how you were faring please keep us posted!

Actually, No I havent. The latest....the Animal Protection in Memphis now only takes those who live in Shelby county. The woman from there told me that there is a mobile Spay Station that travels around and does spaying. There is a site on the internet about this but it looks like they dont actually come to my town. I need to do more investigating, AND Im not certain they do ferrals.

Just moving to Tennessee Im not very familiar with the names of various counties (mine is Henderson). I did leave a message however (seems like everytime you attempt to contact someone you have to talk to a machine). The recorded message said they will get back to you in a few days. Its been 4 days since I called and no response.

You hear a lot about groups that go around and spay, most of which no longer have funding, or they are on the other side of the State, OR they only do inside their county. I called the local humane society and the person there said that even when you get a spay certificate, you not only have to still pay around $45-$55 per spaying, but also you need to add on another $10 to $20 for shots. Might as well not even think of going that route even if I simply paid to have the females spayed, because of our income situation here.

My 94 yr old mammy in law was upset the other day, especially when she found out the dog fighting thing. You should have seen the look on her face, although she knows I wouldnt do anything to put these kitties in jeopardy. She loves the momma cat and wants to keep more then one kitten. She told me last night to come down as she made some biscuits for the kittens. I know all the cat fanciers on here would cringe at that, but she has always fed them a tray of leftover biscuits and country ham from the mornings breakfast.

Anyway, Im waiting ONCE AGAIN (you know Ive been working on this situation for over a month) for a return phone call. I am just about out of ideas.

To top it all off I havent seen Midnight (my only ferral that has become domesticated) in two days

Hun, I'm sorry to hear about Midnight!!

I was just thinking that if there's no place else you can find, why not call up local vets and see if they can do something Pro Bono or at reduced cost for you? To be honest, I don't know what they'd say. But I've never met a vet that wasn't an animal lover, and vets certainly know about the need for ferrals to be spayed. If you explain your situation about not being able to afford the humane society prices, and the rescue society not doing any work outside the county, maybe they'd be willing to work with you to get these cats fixed.

Well another dead end. The Spay Station ALSO services in the Nashville area. It is difficult for me to believe that there are actually NO groups or agencies that assist with the cat population in this area, especially since we are surrounded by pastures. The population has to absoultely be booming here. My one brother in law who lives about 5 minutes down the road from me has a population of 7 himself.

Thank you wodesorel for you concern and your suggestion. We have at least 4 types of pet clinics in Lexington and I believe I will go to each one and see if they have a solution. Isnt it amazing that we have all those in such a little town and yet no groups going around trying to spay/neuter the ferral population here?

Midnight did return yesterday after being gone two days. I guess he is being to do his Tom Cat thing and wonder off now and then. I called Crybaby for her supper last night and here pops Midnight out of the feeding bin under the steps !
