I have a Siamese cat named Charlie Bucket
, and a Chocolate Lab names Willy Wonka
. I live in Morgantown, WV and work for the University. Charlie is currently recoving from a urinary blockage
. He was in the hospital for about a week. We almost lost him. I have been heart broken.
I didn't realize how much I love him until he got sick. I have put him on prescription cat food. He is started to get much better. My question?? is, is there anything else that someone can suggest to help me keep him well, and not to have surgery. Thanks

Jsams,
So sorry Charlie Bucket is sick. He is in my prayers. Did your vet give you any other advice? Keep checking the forum; someone with more knowledge than me might be able to help.

Which surgery are we talking about?

If he becomes blocked and needs an anesthetic to put in a catheter (some people would consider this a surgery because of the anesthetic), to keep that from happening keep him on the prescription food and make sure he is peeing.

If you are talking about a surgery to remove stone in the bladder, then if they are big enough to cause problems then the should come out, and be glad they are in the bladder where they can be removed. I have a dog who has stones in her kidneys which cannot be removed, so she is on the prescription food plus Tetracycline the rest of her life to fight infection and inflammation.

Push fluids- invest in a Drinkwell Pet Fountain if you can, they are great for cats to encourage them to drink more. If you can't manage the $40 some dollars, go to the grocery store buy a jumbo size can of tuna (in water not oil) and some old-fashioned ice cube trays, come home and make tuna cubes. Drain the liquid into the trays and freeze. Float one tuna cube a day in the water bowl to encourage drinking-

or toss some colored (washed) pebbles into the water bowl, or some marbles, or float a ping pong ball in the water (to encourage drinking).

Throw out your old litter pans before Charlie comes home. They sometimes associate the pans with the pain. So giving him brand new ones will stop any litter pan accidents before they begin.

I'm sorry you had such a scare. UTI and blockages are really scary for both the cat and the owner- Let him have plenty of rest so he can recover, in a dark, quiet room.
