I am the proud parent of an 11 year old son (only child). He's in middle school this year (6th grade) and eating the experience up with a big spoon! A few months into the school year I got curious as to whether he was starting to notice girls or not. He was and mentioned a girl whose locker is next to his. They also are in the same home-room. He'd never mention her on his own but every now and then I'd ask how she was.

Well, for Valentine's Day the school choir did a fundraiser by selling conversation heart candy, carnations & roses. I asked my son if he was going to get anything for his friend and I told him that I thought a carnation might be nice. Last Thursday I heard him getting money out of his bank. When he got home I casually asked if he had ordered a flower or candy for his friend. You can imagine my amazement when he said that he had gotten a box of candy, one carnation & two roses for her!

It turns out that about two weeks ago she was in an automobile accident and had both of her legs broken. She'd been in the hospital since then! So yesterday after school his dad and I took him to the hospital to drop off his candy and flowers.

They were so cute together! Her mom was happy to see my son and said that her daughter kept talking about him, wondering what he was doing. The poor girl has three breaks in her two legs. She'll need months and months of rehabilitation. I was so glad we went, so proud of my son for being brave enough to visit a girl in the hospital. Judging from what her mom said the feelings must be mutual.

So, does anyone else have stories of 1st loves? I always kept things from my parents and so never had an experience like my son did yesterday. How 'bout it? Anyone else want to share their story?

Oh the poor girl. Your son seems very genuine and brave when many boys at that age are so fickle,, it's great that he was thoughtful and sweet. Congrats on parenting such a sweet boy!!

This isn't really what you asked. I don't know why, but it reminds me of something SO cute.

Years ago I was waitressing the day before Valentine's Day. Someone, who obviously had a huge surplus came in selling 2 dozen roses for $5.00. The bus boy asked me if he could borrow $5.00. I said sure, but I didn't know you had a girlfriend. He said "I don't, but if I had 2 dozen roses, I could get one!"

Thanks everyone! I wasn't fishing for compliments but I have to admit they've made my day. He has always been a very thoughtful child. I was very curious to see what she looked like. My son is small for his age and it turns out that his friend is even smaller than he is! She looked so sweet and frail. I can understand how he was drawn to her.

Rockcat, I loved your story. That is too, too funny!

Coolcat, bite your tounge with that MIL talk, okay?

Again, thanks everyone! Just thinking about the time and effort I've put into that boy since he was conceived he'd better turn out to be a decent male!

Amie, that is a great story and very, very cute.
No, nothing quite like that to share. I pulled John Cloonis into my closet when I was 6 and made him dress up as a gypsy and kiss me.

Yes & No. We're moving into that teenage era full of silences and heavy sighs and flared tempers out of the blue. But it is going to be fascinating to watch him turn into a real-live adult. I will say one thing to all prospective parents of boys out there, the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs have made a big, positive impact on my son. And, of course, our having taken him to church since before he could roll over. No personal sacrifice is too great when you're talking about the development of a child - physically, mentally, & spiritually.

Okay, end of lecture for today. Everyone, enjoy your Wednesday!
