Cat knead for a variety of reasons. They could be comfortable, and kneading just is an expression of that comfort. They have scent pads on their paws, so if you are petting your kitty she is leaving her signature on your lap or the blanket, and will come back to the spot later if she gets upset and it will soothe her.

Some cats knead because of insecurity. if they have been taken from mom to early they will knead on your lap or leg to calm down.

could they do it b/c they are frusterated? He always seems to do it when he wants to sleep in the chair I'm sitting in.

yep- or if it is a place he sleeps at, he is marking it for his own- (trying to scare you off with his scent)

I have a six month old kitten (who was taken from her mum too early) who kneads my teddy bear. I have since bought her her own one as she was also sucking it!

She only does it at bedtime, when I am in bed and she is on the bed with me. She knead, sucks and purrs like a train!!

Should I be worried that she is insecure? Should I try and wean her off her bear or is it harmless?

They usually knead when they are preparing for a nap, so I would suggest that it serves to run off any insects in the grass or on or around or under whatever it is they are planning to sleep on. Sort of like dogs going in a circle or two before they bed down.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to communicate with them so we could just ASK ? ?

Leonard.

YEAH! That would be so cool! My cats kneed all the time. CJ will kneed me when she's laying down, and I come up and pet her. Billy, will do that, sometimes, but not much. Although, when he snuggles up next to me when I'm in bed, he always does that before he lays down!

Limerick does the three circles too! The whole routine thing is come wondering in the bedroom, cherping the entire time, rub against my feet and chair, purring and cherping, then jump on my bed, still puring and cherping, staring me down and kneeds my bed, the 3 circles then lays down making adjustmeks like he's uncomfortable for about 5 mins, in a circle I might add, then he sprawls out, maing t imposible for me to fit on to the bed when I am finaly ready to hit the sack. This is a daily accurence begining at 730.

I've heard that kneading is what kittens do to get milk from their mothers. So, by kneading the people they own, it shows that they are content and transferring their warmest of memories (eating!) onto their people. I like to think about that theory when Eppie's little claws dig into my shoulder every night

My youngest was in the same boat, except she would knead me and wean on my shirt!! She stopped doing it as much on her own as she got older and now does it only on very rare occasions when she is especially content. I've heard of cats continuing the behavior for their whole lives. I would think that if you discouraged her from doing this, which obviously makes her feel secure, it would have the opposite effect you are hoping for. Just give her lots of love and she'll be fine!!

i agree. its just like a kid sucking his thumb. we all have our little habits, she may or may not grow out of it as she matures. but i really wouldnt worry
