Solutions? clumping litter stuck in lift & sift sifter.

I have a lift & sift style litterbox. The problem is that the clumping litter (I use fresh step) gets stuck in the holes of the lift out sifter--in fact it seems like the clumps form around the holes of the sifter. One thread suggested non-stick spray. Besides using a litter that does not clump, can anyone offer any more solutions?

Perhaps it is the brand or amount of litter?

That is why I stopped using that type of litter box - it became messier cleaning it up than the conventional box. The idea is a good one, and I never did try the non-stick spray - that might be the best solution. I think any type of clumping litter is going to offer the same problem, unfortunately.
