Do any of you eat mango's? I bought one today at the grocery store, just because they were on sale and I had never eaten one. Does anyone have any experience with how to eat them???

You can do a lot with mangoes like make salsa or fruit salad or ice cream, or just eat them fresh. We tend to just wash them, peel them and bite them right off the seed (it's long, thin and oval). Just love fresh mangoes.

wow...there really is something on the world wide web for anything, eh??

I was going to say...carefully!!!

I still have a small scar on my thumb from a mango incident...

hey those things are slippery!! now I just eat them when a fancy buffet has them all prepared for me but if you can figure it out, its totally worth it! Mangoes rock!

Oh, and they should be slightly squishy if they're ripe.

I don't know how but it looks liek you have found out anyways. Enjoy it :-) me is now thinking of going to buy a mango. I am a huge fan of mango juice...yummy and not forgetting mango sorbet too!

Yum Yum :-)

Enjoy Eva x

Yes, definately soft, Susie, and it should smell sweet. Otherwise, you may want to give it a couple of days.

wait for it to go soggy and ripe then make it into a smoothie!

i love mangos but the stringy bits always stick in your teeth and the juice dribbles everywhere.

Oh yeah, they are messy to eat, but soooooo worth it!

Susie - put the mango down and step away from the mango. Let it ripen a bit!

Give the poor mango a chance to ripen Susie! It's only fair!

lol the best mango i have ever eaten is in australia i can just eat a whole box in a day!!
let it ripen for atleasr 3 - 4 days,
Its a shame they dont import the australian mangoes to here in germany
we get them from puerto rico and some parts of south america but they arent so tasty, some go off even when they are still green.

So let me get this straight........I should give it a few days before I try to eat it??
if you want to eat it on its own eat it now. otherwise it'll be like baby mush if you leave it a few days and sweet like syrup!

if you want sorbet or smoothies leave it a few days next to a banana, they make them ripen quicker!

I enjoy waiting until they're super ripe and oh, so sweet, and always eat them by themselves just like they are. I prefer it chilled, though.

Red and green, eh? Sounds like one of the varieties we get here too, and it doesn't necessarily mean it's not ripe, if it's the same variety. Go by feel -- do a squeeze test much like you would for a peach or a pear -- if it doesn't "give" to the squeeze it's not ready. Put it in a paper bag and leave it on your counter for a day or so. That should take care of it.

I use mangoes in fruit salad or on top of waffles. Peel with a potato peeler. Score lengthwise every 1/2 inch or so, and then cut crosswise, with a sort of scooping motion to take the chunks off the stone. Only cut as deep as is easy to do, and you'll leave the stringy bits behind on the stone.

Another thing -- if you also see another variety of mango, slightly smaller and yellow all over - called Atalufo, I think, or something quite similar -- try them. I like them even better. Easier to handle and tastier. We don't get them all the time, though.

Good luck! They are sooooo wonderful!
