I was grabbing cans of cat food in a hurry yesterday, trying for a variety of flavors and textures, and noticed how the 3 oz. Safeway Select had some interesting flavor combos, and are cheaper than Fancy Feast.

I picked up a can of a flavor combo I know Tyler likes - Beef and Liver (ground texture), and popped a few cans of this in my cart. At the last minute, I decided, hey I should check to see if they add garlic (since I don't feed that) as a seasoning.
To my absolute horror I found they use Onion Salt! It doesn't matter if it's powdered onion, cooked onion, I know of NO ONE who disputes that onions are toxic to cats. I was gobsmacked!

Please...remember to check the ingredients list on any can of cat food when buying it for the first time.

Thanks for the warning! I used to buy Safeway Select canned food for my kitties all the time. I always just looked at the first couple of ingredients. Is onion salt used in all their wet food varieties?

I didn't check them all, but let me tell you those cans flew back out of my cart onto the shelf!

that is really scary!!
Its hard for me to believe that there is stuff on the market that is actually harmful to our babies...I mean, I can accept that some things are better than others, but why would anyone put something that is toxic for cats into cat food??

I'll be sure to never pick up a can of that!

I don't understand it either, and will be checking the other canned flavors they have next time I go shopping there.

I have three "inside" cats and over the past year a number of strays found that I feed. Several days ago I was looking for their regular canned food but the store did not have the flavors they like. I picked up 10 or so cans of Safeway's Select canned cat food. After feeding the Safeway Select one of the outside cats showed up drooling and not wanting to eat. A day or so later a second outside cat showed up drooling and not wanting to eat. Most recently one of the indoor cats showed up drooling and not wanting to eat. The only common denominator between the inside cats and the outside cats that is new or different is the Safeway Select canned cat food.
