My male cat, Skylar, has a UTI. I took him to the vet and started his antibiotic on Monday. He has had this condition before and this is the second time it's come back. I have taken him to a more helpful and thorough vet however, this time around. So my question now is how long till the UTI goes away completely? I left him overnight at the vet on Monday so they could get a urine sample and the antibiotic would have a chance to work through his system. When I picked him up on Tuesday, I noticed no more urinating out of the box until I came home from work this afternoon. I saw him attempting to go a couple of times outside of the box. I gave him more of the antibiotic and he seems better. SO with that all said, I am asking for help in terms of what I can do to prevent this condition from returning, and could this be something more *serious*? I have read up a little on that UT disease, or whatever it is called. The vet didn't seem to think that he had this condition, however, I am going to call tommorrow to follow up on the urine sample. I heard that this condition can be changed with food. What types of food do you all feed your kitties? I have been feeding mine Purina and Purina Indoor Formula since they were little but I guess this isn't the bestest of choices...........

Hi,

Pickles had a problem with UTI's they changed his food, to Hills Science Diet, my vet and he seems to have done quite well. I didn't know he had the UTI until I asked my sister (she has 8 cats) what it meant when he kept going in and out of his litterbox, and then he squatted on the kitchen floor and a few drops of urine were there, she said to get him to the vet he may have a UTI and he did. In regards to the blood, I would call or take Skylar back to the vet, as I would be concerned with that too. Let me know how you make out. Good Luck!!!!

I would also take Skylar in (I would even consider another vet) About him peeing outside the box. Throw away your old litter pan and buy two new ones. They sometimes associate the pan itself as a predator, because "it" caused pain. Buying new ones is always a way around that.

It can take the full course of the antibiotic, and sometimes, it may take a longer course than is usually prescribed. Did your vet do a culture and sensitivity on the urine sample? If not, it's possible the current antibiotic isn't effective for what is causing the infection.

The blood in the urine, the squatting = straining imo, are both signs this isn't coming under control yet...a vet call is def. in order even though it's only been a few days on the medication, sounds as if this is a bit worse versus improving.

Hey! Well Skylar seems to be doing much better. I called the vet and his urine sample came back negative for anything. They said that I could always bring him in for an ultrasound but I am going to hold off until he finishes the antibiotic completely. Afterall, he has only been on it since Monday and the vet did say he needs to finish the whole thing. I will keep you all posted though. Please let me know too about good diet recommendations. I have tried giving him soft food in the past and he didn't eat it. He has been on Purina & Purina Indoor since I got him as a kitten from North Shore Animal League. Also, if say something serious does happen with him in the future, is there anywhere I can go where the do treatment cheaper then the vet? I don't have insurance for him. Oh, I live in the NYC area.

I have have a similiar problem with one of my cats. Kuce seems prone to the problem and she has had it 4 times since we adopted her. We have had her on Hill's s/d? and IVD diet until it was under control. The last time she was on medication to treat it for 20 days to hopefully wipe it out for a while.

Some cats are more prone to it from what I understand (I could be wrong here) and being under stress from any number of reasons seems to not help matters any.

Would your vet be willing to take payments? Could you talk to North Shores and see if they can recommend a vet that might be willing to work with you?

Good luck and hope Skylar feels better real soon.

Well I talked to the vet and of course he was busy and couldn't come to the phone. The receptionist was like "just bring him in for an ultrasound". I don't want to do this just yet, and that will cost me $350 if there is not a stone or anything else wrong with him. I am thinking of just taking him in on Monday evening to meet with the vet. When I've taken him to the vet, he examined him and said there was no blockage/stone so I don't see the need to get an ultrasound?!

The receptionist doesn't know how to take a message for the vet to call you back when he's not busy? Oh c'mon....one of my part time jobs once was as a receptionist at a small animal hospital, it's not for the receptionist to suggest/decide what your next course of action should be, it's to take a message.

Imho.

I was in the same jam with my cats (I have three) also from North Shore. When it came time to go for check ups and when they got ill I felt like I had to take out a loan in the bank to afford my local vets. My solution has been to go to Humane Society in the city. It is right next to the 59th street bridge and they do check up and shots for 30 dollars. Any other medical treatment that is needed they are up front and tell you how much everything is and they also provide affordable dental care which all my cats need. Google them for the exact address they are really good and the vets there are really nice. Good luck.
