Robin,

I'm so glad to hear that things are looking up. My experience with an emergency vet is similar to yours. When I took Penelope in last October for respiratory problems, they took x-rays, showed them to me and said, "This means its nothing good." They went through the possibilities of what it could be (before having all the results) and Feline Leukemia was up there among the potential diagnoses. When it turned out to be pyothorax, a disease which is 60-70% treatable with appropriate care, they even suggested I might want to put her to sleep!! (Some people, I guess, do not want to pay the $1,000 plus I did to get Penelope better).

So, in short, I agree with Mary Anne that emergency doctors are alarmists. I'm glad your new vet has reassured you.

In any case, I will be praying for all of you that things go well.
Please keep us updated.

Let's hope this female doc is right! I've got my fingers crossed for you!!!
Yeah it does make me feel a lot better! I have a lot of faith in both of my vets and that's one of the reasons that I chose not to pay over $200 last night for bloodwork that the guy at the emergency clinic suggested. My family, (parents, sister, and me) have all taken our pets to this same vet for almost 20 years and they have never steered us wrong......and I've never felt that they were just trying to make money from me by suggesting a bunch of needless tests. Today's visit was only $40 and that included Thomas's medication and she spent close to an hour with him...checking him from head to toe and reassuring me that he was going to be fine.

Next week is going to be a challenge though.......I'm getting Thomas, Cooper, and Abby all fixed on the same day. I'm off work Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll be able to stay home with them to make sure everyone recovers ok.

I'm so happy that the vet feels fairly sure that Thomas is just fine and that his "problems" are easily fixed. I've been giving my sweetie kisses and hugs all day!

You were smart! My visit to the emergency clinic cost over $500 because of the tests. I didn't even think about asking to do it elsewhere because I was such a nervous wreck!

I was too....and I think that's why they suggest so many tests because they know we are vulnerable during that time and are more likely to pay anything.

I also think that all my medical training has helped me to learn not to panic until it's time to panic. Although, I did break down and cry all the way home at the thought of my sweet Thomas possibly having leukemia....and then having exposed all my other cats to it. I was a wreck last night.....but at least I remained calm in the clinic and just listened to everything the vet was telling me.....and then tried to make a rational decision as to what should be done. I knew that even if it was leukemia......it wasn't a medical emergency that had to be taken care of right that minute. That's why I chose to wait and take him to my own vet this morning. The main reason I took him in last night though, was because I was afraid that he may have something lodged in his throat that he couldn't get up.....and that IS a medical emergency.

I'm just catching up with this thread, and was very relieved to get to your post about what one of your regular vets said. Our last cat had gingivitis, and we were never sure what caused it, because he had a habit of stealing lunch meat and raw meat from shopping carts at the local supermarket. Our vet recommended Hill's prescription diet for sensitive stomachs (I think that was c/d), and it seemed to help. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Thomas!

Just now caught this thread. Robin, sorry you had to deal with that drama but I am happy that Thomas and your whole family will be ok. I'm also sending good vibes your way for when you have Abby, Thomas, and Cooper fixed.

Robin, I just saw this thread and when I was reading it I was in tears (I was praying for him) but when I read your latest update, I was so happy to hear that he was ok.

Good luck to Cooper, Thomas and Abby next week.

Thank God! I am VERY HAPPY to hear of this... I always perk up my ears and my blood races a bit quicker when I hear any talk of FeLV, and I'm nowhere near an expert (just a grieving owner, still) but your vet is very right.. especially with no fever, no weight loss, and they can do a snap test next week with the blood work. In my opinion little Freddie (RIP 11/9/03) had the best in the biz out here, a specialist, and she said the same thing about Sasha's chances of having it when all he needed was a molar pulled. I am ecstatic at this point and I know what a huge weight is lifted off your shoulers, Mama Robin!!! I love that photo of him by the window too, just pulls at my heart.

Well I gave Thomas his first dose of the metaclopramide tonight so we can see if that helps with his vomiting. He did really well and didn't fight me too bad while I was trying to get the pill down his throat. He's SO hungry right now though because he threw up all of his breakfast and hasn't eaten since. Poor baby!

He seems to be eating the new food ok.....the sample that the doc gave me. He looked at it kinda funny at first and then looked at me as if he was saying, "You want me to eat THIS?"
It's Purina EN- gastroenteric. I guess if he eats it ok and tolerates it.....then I will make a trip to Petsmart tomorrow to get some more.

I'm just going to have to be vigilant about taking up ALL the cat food after everybody eats so that Thomas doesn't get into the other food. Maybe I'll be able to find something that agrees with all of them and eventually I can go back to feeding them together.

Robin, that's a real smart idea. I've been through that in the past with Sasha's mama. Sometimes you just get food into a kitty's tummy and the food says "oops, sorry, wrong number. Eject!"
We're still thinking of you~~~
