I have been seeing a new man for a few months and he has two lovely silver Abyssinian sisters, Mena and Princess, who are ten years old. Princess is really his cat and they have a very loving, close relationship. She will leap on him from the lounge and hang on his shoulder, lick the back of his neck and knead his shoulder blade. They sleep together and she head-butts him awake every morning. It is very, very sweet.

The only thing is, she absolutely hates me!
She is a very talkative cat, and you can have extended conversations with her, and she makes it very clear when I am around that she is not happy! This is new for me - I have never ever had a cat that doesn't love me almost straight away, and it is quite upsetting sometimes, actually (lol). The other day the funniest thing happened, I was on the phone to Max and he said, `Princess, it's Sarah, come and say Hello' and held out the phone to her. She hissed, took a swipe at the phone and stalked away! He couldn't believe it - it was hilarious and certainly if her feelings weren't clear before they were then!

She is slowly coming around - I have not smothered her and have left her pretty much to come to me - but it is taking time.

Has something like this ever happened to anyone else? Would love to hear your stories!

Hmmm... well, my male colleague and his wife have five cats. The one female cat he had before they moved in together, Gretchen, is STILL extremely jealous of his wife. I think that's unusual, though. I bet Princess will warm up to you.

Oh, and you do realize it's jealousy don't you? You've taken HER man!

Just a thought: maybe you should bring "Kitty Kaviar" when you come over. If Princess learns to associate you with a special treat, she may warm up to you faster. You can find "Kitty Kaviar" on the web or at specialty pet stores. Cats go CRAZY for it!

W/ the best cats
Oh my, Princess is sure jealous of you!

When my Joji doesn't like someone she acts the same way like Princess and if given a chance she will scratch.
But she is a loner and doesn't socialize well with humans.
I hope Princess and you become good friends soon!

Wow that's a good idea. Yeah - I know it's jealousy, mostly I find it rather sweet. It would be less insulting, however, if all of my cats didn't TOTALLY adore him (even Cairo who is quite standoffish)!!! Now he thinks he's the Cat Whisperer. Insufferable...lol.

He is pretty strict on treats though - however I will ask him what he thinks.

The Cat whisperer!
That's too funny.

Well, Kitty Kaviar is just fish flakes and it's all natural. I don't think it would ruin Princess's diet.

BTW, how lucky are you to find a man who is as crazy about cats as you are?

I KNOW!! It was such a bonus! Although my ex-husband loves animals, too, he is not on the same level as me and Max! We have ridiculous amounts in common - including the fact that before I met him I used to joke and call myself the Cat Whisperer!!!

I did cheat a little bit, though. He works at a neighbouring hospital which is how we met, but it was over the phone, and when we realised we were interested in each other and started to email, literally the second question I asked him was `What is your opinion of cats?' His answer `I rate cats very highly' was definitely the right one for me!!

When I start dating again (I really haven't wanted to after going through a bad relationship that ended two years ago), that will definitely be one of my first questions too!!

Actually, in the same email I asked him what his political affiliations were, too. After all, after liking cats, that's pretty important!!

Yes! I made sure to word my questions so he would have to give me honest answers, too - it's a good method you should try it.

Your girls in your signature are soooooo sweet! Penelope is my middle name, and she looks just like my Sunday did when she was a baby. Lucky for you making it through the downtime. I lost all 350 of my posts

Awww... thanks for the compliment. That photo was taken when they were about 5 months old. Here's another photo of Penelope at 2.5 years:

And actually, that "survival" award is deceiving. It just means I got through the downtime without committing hari-kari.
I had to sign up for an account again, too. I lost about 700 posts!

Your babies are adorable, too! Do you have a thread where I can see more of their photos?

You know - in that photo she looks just like the darling I had when I was a little girl, Pepper. I had that angel for 19 years and then one day she just disappeared. Heartbreaking.

I lost all my photo posts in the downtime but here are some more...(one or fifty...lol!)

AWWWWWW.....
You need to set up a thread, girl!!

BTW, are there three cats here or two? If it's just two, then that black, fluffy one is huge! Is that Pepper?

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost Pepper the way you did. That must have been devastating for you. I'm glad you have three such beautiful babies now.

In those pictures there's only two. Cairo lives with my Mum at the moment so I haven't really got many recent ones of her. No - the black one is Sunday. And yes, she is huge. But Scratchy is also very tiny for a cat her age. Sunday was the most miniature thing you've ever seen when she was a kitten. She's not fat, she is just soooooo stocky it's amazing. I swear when you pick her up it feels like she weighs ten stone! She is the sweetest, most loving, affectionate adorable little angel in the world. Cairo is a law unto herself and Scratchy is mischief personified. They all have such delightfully different little personalities. My boy loves Sunday the best - he thinks she's not very bright but she's so sweet it makes up for it. Unfortunately, he's right...lol!

What sweet kitties... I love them all! Why did you name Sunday that? It's cute!

About Princess... I have no clue, I guess you're best off offering treats. Or maybe just continue taking it slowly, ignoring her and see if she gets tired of feeling ignored and looks for attention from you?

Well, I can see why Cairo adores Sunday. I would like to love on her myself -- big, warm, and fluffy. PURRRRR...... You're right -- she doesn't look fat, just big in comparison to tiny Scratchy!

Unfortunately lately I have been a bad mummy and she has lots of dreadlocks. I need to clip her this week. Poor baby.
