My cat Eva has been with me for 8 months now. She is a 6 year old Himalayan. I am her second owner. For the past month or so, she uses any throw rug or living room carpet to urinate on. It's not all the time, but more often than the litterbox. Does anyone out there know what causes this behavior? Her litterbox is always very clean. I am almost at the end of my rope. I have come to the conclusion that the woman I got her from must have had the same problem and chose not to tell me. Please, any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't want to lose her.

She really really really needs to see a vet! Most of the time when a cat refuses to use a litterbox it's a health problem that's causing a behaviour. It could be an infection, stones, or something else that's causing her discomfort.
Only a vet can tell you what's going on and offer treatment.

Plus, if she had this problem with her last owner, she would have had problems from when you first got her, not develope them months later.

I absolutely agree with wodesorel. You need to have a urinalysis done on your kitty. Willow would occasionally pee next to the litter box on the newspaper or on clothing (like my boyfriend's pants). I thought she was upset because I had brought another cat into the house. One day, she peed on a t-shirt that I had put in a box. I took her to the vet shortly there after, and we discovered she had a urinary infection. She's on antibiotics now, and has been almost perfect about peeing in her box. She has had two "accidents" since, but her infection hasn't cleared up yet.

Cats often pee in the wrong place to tell you that they are unhappy or in pain. Since this problem came about very suddenly, it is likely that an infection is the cause.
