My cat was diagnosed with CRF about three months ago, although it was low or just beginning. I don't know whether to be worried or happy. I decided that he should eat people grade protein foods. So, i bought cases of Wellness canned catfood. My cat eats this stuff like candy, he absolutely loves it! Which I think is great, however, I am still a little nervous about his protein intake. Does anyone have any words of comfort for me or wisdom???? Am I doing the right thing?

You may want to study this site, Sabrina, which lists the Protein, Phosphorus, Sodium, and Fat content of various canned foods. You can view the Dry foods by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. You will, of course, want to have any dietary alterations approved by your Icki's vet.

Hi Sabrina,

Your vet should have given you the lab results and discussed the course of treatment that would be used for the stage of CRF your kitty is at..if not, I'd call and get a copy of the lab tests and make sure you have a follow-up apt. to see how your kitty is doing.

There is a lot that can be done to manage your cat's crf, which can affect both quality of remaining years and how many years, your cat will have.

If you have not yet, please visit these two superb sites: Tanya's Site and Feline Crf dot com

Please consider that Wellness contains garlic, and crf kitties in particular are ill equipped to deal with a substance that may cause anemia (Heinz Body Anemia) as many eventually develop non-regenerative anemia. A cat's sensitivity to garlic does vary cat by cat, with some not tolerating garlic even in the lowest dose or reacting fairly quickly to having foods/supplements containing this, others never react.

Here is an article by a vet on the toxicity of garlic:article on garlic

I, and a number of other tcs members have,or have had, kitties with crf, so know that we understand what it can be like to have a cat with this chronic condition.

There are some great Yahoo! Groups for the humans who care for CRF kitties. I have a hyperthyroid kitty, and I know it is helpful to read what other people are going through. If you search for CRF, you can find some active groups where people have lots of experience in dealing with what you are going through.

You are SO RIGHT! Here is the biggie one! I post on it but as I said it is VERY Big so it may take a time or two for them to answer your Questions! My Girl (besides having IBD and asthma/allergies) has early CRF too. The ONLY food she will eat is fancy feast! It is too high protein and phospherous but she also gets subQ fluids!

Yup, this is the group I've belonged to for several years, as do other TCS members, and this is the group I recommend often. Great group
