O.K., so I was wondering. I know that storms affect my guys - that was apparent during the monster rains we had recently. But I was wondering...

Do winds affect the feline family members too?

We have Santa Ana winds today - and indeed for the last two days; today, however, we are having gusts over 50 mph. It seems to correlate to Simon's gusts over 50 mph, too. Si has been unusually aggressive and beyond his normal activity level today, and the only thing I can think of is the winds. Of course, the others aren't reacting at all....just Simon (who's pretending to be devil spawn from darkest hell today...).

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight/thoughts/ideas.

:p I think Simon is on a higher plane than like the rest of the known universe.. lol maybe.. the atmospheric pressures affect Si's behaviour.. BTW, any other new and amazing acts of simon recently?

Sometimes when I take Shinobi out for walks it will be super windy. (crazy gusty winds here in pittsburgh, sometimes I must hang on to buildings and I am not a small individual) This seems to make her very edgy, I think the sound is scary, lots of tree and rustling noises. It could be he's hearing all the noises from outside make him edgier than the rest.

Santa Ana's have a lot of folk lore around them, I always think of like a Raymond Chandler mystery when I think of them.

Si's great adventures today include him pretending to be a Great Wallenda, walking the shower curtain rod.

Also, he's really perfecting the secretary service; he's discovered how to turn on the computer, answer the landline and then greets the person, yelling alternatively "MOM! Phone call for you!!!!" (my father thinks this is highly entertaining; my boss does not...), and turn off the answering machine when he wants to answer the phone. He also helps the paper come out of the printer, facilitating my poor printer's propensity in jamming. And according to the condition of the keyboard and mouse today, he's trying to send emails to everyone.

He's also decided that Pavorati has nothing on him...anytime music is played, Simon sings along. He also thinks that he needs to be gifting Pengy with all sorts of things, inlcuding my pillows from the bed. Needless to say, Simon dragging a pillow from my bed to Pengy terrifies her, so then he sings at her to calm her. It doesn't work, but he doesn't let that stop him.

Sigh. I can't keep up with him. And he's picked fights with three of the 5 today- all have gotten fed up with him and his antics today. All of them have hissed and smacked him at one point or the other, and the day is only 1/2 gone...

Cessena, he's not acting frightened, per se. He's being a handful, but it's not a fearbased issue at all. I think there's an ion-thing which goes on, but I don't know why it would affect him and not the others. OTOH, like Turtlecat said, Si's on a whole 'nother plane of existence. He lives on Planet Psychotic, I think...or at least he's visiting it today. Sigh...

Hey Michele!

Let me explain this, cuz some animals are affected and some are totally oblivious, and yes, what you are experiencing is quite common.
The air speed of 50 mph that comes from the warm Santa Ana winds creates a steep drop in the pressure gradient or a massive lowering of air pressure in your region (similar to a hurriane, like a "dry" hurricane). When that dry air lifts up and over the southern Sierra mountain range from the east in California, it colides with the cooler Pacific ocean air to the west and then slams down the mountainside into the L.A. and Orange County basin. This creates a sudden drop in air pressure. The higher the windspeed, the lower the air pressure. Lots of animals react as their ears can pop just like ours and they can feel the instability of the air. Sasha's mama, SiSi, was very sensitive to our howling windstorms up here during the winter but Sasha would just be sacked out someplace warm and totally oblivious!
Hope this helps~~ being the storm-chaser and weather nut case I am!

Thanks, Elizabeth. That helps a lot.

Simon calmed down so much once the winds left...it was nice to get my normal rambunctious Simon back rather than the horned, drooling, afire demon I had for a few hours there. At one point, after yet another crashbang, I wanted to just hide...

LOLOL! And to think I was worried about his energy level post-neutering!

OMG Michele! Now I want to call you just to have Simon answer the phone!
