Hi all!! This is my first post... and I'm a first-time new mommy to Toby. He's 8 weeks old and I adopted him on Sunday. He had been vet checked prior to adoption (he's a rescue kitten) and I also took him for a check yesterday.

So I guess I'm just a nervous new mom!!

Toby has some bloody mucous on his anus after he poops, and he has really stinky farts
At our vet visit yesterday I mentioned the bloody mucous (but I forgot to tell her about the gas)... she figured it could be "Stress colitis" and that he should be fine... (he's had 2 deworming protocols).
His poop looks "normal" (I've not had a kitten before, but it seems ok) and he plays and cuddles and eats and drinks.... seems totally happy and stress free.

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance from some more experienced people out there. I'm head-over-heels in love with this guy already, and am worried there could be something wrong that hasn't shown up yet.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi and welcome! Congrats on adopting Toby, that's a great name, in fact I wanted to name a cat that myself!

You're doing a fabulous job so far... we adopted our second cat on a Sunday and he had already been vet checked but we had him checked out by our own vet also - it's great that you did that.

Whenever we've gotten a new cat (2 within the past 5 or 6 months) they've come a bit "stinky". I think it's basically a result of them not eating really good food. What are you feeding Toby now, if you don't mind me asking? If he's already been dewormed and checked out by the vet and SEEMS fine I'm sure it'll go away... granted I'm not a professional and I'm sure someone else will be along to tell you otherwise! I'd still keep an eye on it and make sure it DOES go away.

Thanks for adopting Toby and taking such wonderful care of him already! We love seeing pictures, if you have any!

He's pretty young and blood and mucous in the stool of kittens is a concern: It could be either one of the following:

change in food
parasites
colitis
giardia
coccidia
distemper

I would run the stool into your vet for testing

Hi again! Thanks for your quick responses! I'll post a bit of biography (and a picture if I can figure out how) in the introductions area.

Currently he's eating a food called "Precise". I plan on changing it to the vet recommended brand (medi-cal) but was going to try to use up what I have first, since the vet didn't think it was the food. I think if the mucous continues I'll probably switch sooner rather then later.

The blood is just in the mucous that's left on his bum after he poops... it doesn't seem to be mixed in with the stool, and it's not frankly bloody - more tinged.

I think I'm going to monitor things really closely for the next few days. He's due for his second set of shots in 2 weeks, so if things stay stable or improve then I guess it's probably ok (that is what the vet said, I might just be paranoid).

We'll see...

Sounds good to me! That's just what I would've done! I've actually seen kittens with bloody looking mucous after they go doo.
It goes away by itself. It's common, for me anyway, with very young kittens. How old is kitty?

Well I just redid the math, and he'll be 10 weeks on sunday.

Everything is still the same, but he doesn't seem to be in any distress. His farts are killing me though!! He's a totaly cuddler and is always wrapped into a ball in the crook of my neck - so when he let's one rip, I'm usually left gasping.

I'm just in the process of switching him to my vet recommended food (Medi-cal). I noticed they add "digestive enzymes" so maybe that will help.

Could he be getting into something, like human food? That would explain the farts. As for the mucous, it doesn't sound like too much to worry about to me, but I could be wrong.

When I adopted my kitten Hammie at age 12 weeks -- he was a smelly farter along with having some very runny poopies (mucous but no blood). I took the little booger to the Vet and he had worms; do we had to go through the whole deworming process.

It pretty much took care of the horrific gas my little boy had... he farted so much it was almost bad to be in the same room as him!!!

Now, he only farts when he is really really really happy and relaxed. I think they just accidentally let loose or something.

Kittens usually have issues from going from one home to another... new home, new surroundings, new food, new everything; a little stress might be involved in the runny poopies. I'd be concerned about the blood though. Hammie's going to the Vet tomorrow AM for bloody poo cuz I think he has anal gland problems.

I never had a kitten with the symptoms you described. Can you call the vet and tell him/her about the stinky part? It may be an important clue to finding out exactly what is wrong.

Also, as Hissy suggested, (BTW, she knows A LOT. Listen to her as much as possible) you should take a stool sample to the vet. You don't need to bring Hammie. You can just take the "sample" out of the litterbox and put it in a ziplock, then bring it to the vet. Even if Hammie's stool was already tested, a second time couldn't hurt. Things can be missed sometimes. In my area it cost about $20.00.

Prayers for your baby.

Hi all ... thought I'd post an update...

My poor kitty must think his mommy is *crazy* since every time he poops I chase him around with a paper towel... then I go unearth his stinky gift and examine it... (before I went back to school I used to work as a nurse...)

Everything stayed stable until yesterday... but his "blood-tinged mucous" turned a lot more bloodier. So in we went today.
She's testing for worms, etc but is suspecting giardia. Because of the bleeding, he's been started on amoxil (in case of a bacterial infection like clostridium) but if the giardia comes back positive then we'll switch to flagyl.

I wasn't going to keep my pet insurance (I got a free trial), but after a $200 bill for a (hopefully) minor diagnosis, I'm thinking I'll keep it!!

Here's hoping Toby and I have an answer and this is the last time he's sick for a looooong time!
