How do you turn a hissy kitten into a tolerant one? Sometimes getting used to people is just a question of exposure.
Brazil is a perfect case in point. He was simply dumped at Best Friends one day as part of a litter of kittens. From the very beginning, he didn't like people very much, and hissed every time he saw anyone. It's been a couple of months since then, and he's still not snuggly, but he's at least become more tolerant. So how did this progress come about? Routine exposure.
Brazil was set up at the Best Friends cat headquarters, where staff come to take breaks, get their coffee and enjoy some chitchat. All day long, he watches people come and go, listens to their voices, notices them glancing his way. At first, he hissed every time someone came in, but that must have gotten tiring! How many hisses does one little kitty really have in him, anyway? He probably didn't want to run out!
Gradually, Brazil learned that if he ignored them, the people would ignore him, too, and there was nothing to be scared of. And then, most miraculous of all, he learned that even if someone reached out to him, nothing bad would come of that either. Thanks to a little extra exposure, he's now well on his way to being ready for a family!
