My 17 year old FIV+ cat has lost over 3lbs. Possibly more. She's not eating right, and her feces output is very low, very dry. The vet found a mass in her belly today. She is going to have some blood tests and a urinalysis to try to figure out what might be going on. The stomach mass could be a tumor or it could be a fecal ball. If it's a fecal ball, it doesn't explain the weight loss, but the dry small poop could be indicative of kidney failure issues if she's consistently staying dehydrated due to kidney failure even though she's drinking and peeing. I know she's old, and in all likelihood, she's terminally ill, but it's still hard to think about letting her go. I will get blood results on Monday and then we will determine what the next step is.

Sending positive vibes her way...hoping for a constipation issue (which would also depress her appetite) that can be addressed.

She's still not eating, and only barely drinking. I've tried dry food, wet food, baby food, kitty milk, water, She'll lap at the baby food for all of 2 seconds, eat 2 or 3 pieces of the dry food (her favorite) and otherwise, ignore it. I feel horrible waiting for lab work until tomorrow, when she's obviously not eating today. She doesn't appear to be suffering, and still wants me to rub her ears and give her scritches. She gets mad when I wipe the baby food on her mouth or paw because she has to lick it off, and she grumbles at me. For the most part, she's laying on my daughter's sleeping bag and sleeping, or watching us. If whatever is wrong is making her not want to eat, do I force her to, or leave her alone and let her go?

I'm not sure...but...for today, if it were me, I'd more push some fluids on her (very carefully) using a syringe...and just some food (you can blend it to make a slurry that can then be carefully syringed). I wouldn't push the food too much today as in trying to give her a full days worth of what she should have for intake, but I would give her some food., and most of all, try to keep her from getting dehydrated...she may already be, and without sub-q, it might not be possible to really get her rehydrated, but giving her some fluids orally would certainly be helpful.

Only you can make the determination. You look at her quality of life, you look at the world through her eyes and not yours. That's the key. We sometimes allow our pets to linger longer than they should just because we can't bear to say goodbye. We always hope for a miracle around the corner that will make a difference. It is a hard choice for us, but since we are their caretakers, we have to do right by them.

This is so hard for me, this will be the first time I've had to make the decision when to let go and I'm wildly unprepared. I really thought since she's not lived with me for so long that I wouldn't be quite so devastated, but I am. I love her, and want to do the right thing. My mom thinks that she's trying to tell me its time to let her go, because she's just off by herself and she's not eating or drinking. My mom picked her back up tonight to take her home, and once I talk to the vet tomorrow I'll have a better idea of what's going on and what to do. If her lab work comes back and it looks as bad as I think its going to, I will probably bring her back to my house tomorrow night keep her with me Monday night and take her in Tuesday.

Kidneys: normal
Liver: Normal

White blood count: Off the chart - some type of infection going on.
Urine: No blood or sugar, but some bacteria
Her glucose is a little high, but nothing to worry about.

Next step: Figure out what the mass is. If it's cancer, well.....
If it's poop, enema or something like that. The bloodwork sometimes will be indicative of cancer, but he said in this case, it's inconclusive. The white blood count could be high if it's a fecal ball that can't pass and it's causing her problems. So I have to drop her off at the vet's tomorrow morning for an x-ray. That should tell us if it's cancer or poop. They will also start her on antibiotics, and if its just poop and we get her cleaned out, they'll re-test her blood in a week to make sure the infection is knocked out. It's still iffy exactly what the problem is.

Unfortunately my Annalyssa has a tumor and I have to put her to sleep. I am going to take her home with me tonight and spend one last night with her and take her in in the morning. She's down to just 8.9lbs and I cant let her suffer.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts and prayers.

Oh, I'm so so sorry.
You're a strong and courageous person to let Annalyssa die peacefully. You gave her an amazing life -- she lived 17 years with FIV! That means not only that you took excellent care of her but also that she was happy and felt loved. Otherwise, I think she would have given up long ago.

You and Annalyssa are in my thoughts and prayers.
