Well... Meishka has now ingested more inedible stuff.

Yesterday about 2 she ate some synthetic christmas wrapping ribbon that I accidently left on the floor while cleaning... and she ate it off the roll so I have no idea how much went down.

She choked on it. It was the most frightening thing I've ever witnessed.
I felt so helpless seeing her gag up this white liquid and rub her face on the floor... but suprisingly she got the ribbon down....

I called the vet and they said since its down to give her hairball remedy twice a day until it passes. They said if she vomits to bring her to the vet.

So I have been watching her like a hawk and cuddling her a lot. Well a little while ago she gagged up some clean liquid. She's been eating a lot so its puzzling that she didn't vomit up her food as well.

I called the vet on call (of course my cat can't get sick in the middle of the week then my vet is actually open). He said if she didn't vomit the food I shouldn't be too concerned and I should monitor her. He said not to worry if she vomits again and to check if the ribbon comes up in the vomit. He told me if she vomits more then 4 times to call him back and take her in to see him. So I gave her some more hairball remedy to help things move along.

I don't know what I'm looking for right now on the board.... advice... comfort... suggestions.... just a little reassurance maybe? Some of you may remember that she ate some elastic before thanksgiving and that came out alright... and that was at least 8 inches of elastic! I just feel like a terrible meowmy because I know better then to leave potential toys on the ground... but I guess because I was cleaning I wasn't thinking... not kitty and I pay the price of my stupidity.

I'll keep ya'll posted.

Oh no Beth! I'm so sorry, I know I would have freaked out if I had been in your shoes, watching my baby choking on ribbon!

I guess if the vet isn't too worried then perhaps you shouldn't be? Don't beat yourself up over it, you do such a great job of taking care of her and one slip doesn't make you a bad mommy!

I'm glad to hear she's okay, playing and such... here's hoping the ribbon comes out soon and without causing much more grief! Keep us updated, will ya?

Yikes! Why do these things always happen on the weekend?!

Crystal used to be that way, used to drive me crazy with worry. I kept putting the hairball stuff down her throat and that seemed to do the trick.

Sending good vibes to Meishka

I'm doing the hairball twice a day with her. I mean, that stuff isn't going to hurt her... not more then that ribbon anyway and I want it OUT of her. Sadly meish only poops every other day so it might not be until tomorrow that I know its out of her....

Meishka vomited a lg amt. of food at 3. I called the on call vet and he said that vomiting is normal and she could still poop out the ribbon. He said to give her more hairball remedy and to call in at 445 this afternoon and we'll discuss what to do.

She is still playful. He said if she gets lethargic to call him and he told me to take up her food for the evening.

Any input?

I just called the vet again. meish has been napping but easily rousable. Not lethargic. I petted her and she meowed at me like normal. Her eyes are still clean and coat all pretty. I also felt her belly gently and its still mushy (what a fat cat I have). The vet said if she vomits 2 more times to call and he will need to see her.

<fingers crossed>

Should I keep her active since she is playful? I don't want to do something that will hurt her insides.

It is nerve wracking waiting and watching but I'd just let her do what she normally does. Just continue keeping a close watch on her.

Meish is still playful. Nose is wet, eyes clear... I'm just worried and I wont feel better until she poops. I'm doing my best not to stress her out as well.

No vomiting since 3pm

Beth, I know how frightened you are. When my Holly was younger she used to eat lots of string even when we did our best to remove it all from the carpet - we went through this a few times too. You and Meish are in my thoughts.

I can't imagine how worried you must be right now. I have never been in this situation, but has your vet said whether or not he would see Meish if the ribbon doesn't pass by tomorrow? I am sure he knows best but I am sure you would feel much better if he would check her out. Please keep us updated

Well Meish hasn't vomited since 3pm and she just drank a good amount of water (its now 1245am). I'm praying that she can keep it down alright. She is sleeping right now. I played with her for awhile this evening and she napped on and off like normal.

*fingers crossed*

Its going to be a long night.

Thanks Sam and Diane.

Its nice to see I'm not the only night owl tonight lol

Meish kept the water down and is snoozing away. I'm sure she doesn't have a clue what is upsetting me lol

Nope... the ribbon is a no show so far. No vomit either so that seems good, right?

She is sleeping now. Still did this weird whining chatter that I haven't heard her do before, but then again I'm normally sleeping at this time lol... she does snore alot however.

I think that it's a good sign she hasn't vomited in a while, I'm not sure how long it will take that ribbon to come out though. I'd be awake all night too if it were one of my kitties. Check her when she wakes to see if she is her normal alert self. Still sending good vibes her way!
