Hi. I am new to this message board.

My brother "accidently" let the cat out yesterday. It has been just under freezing to about 8 degrees between the time I think the cat got out and now. I am at wits end. I have been calling him. making lucky(his name) noises. I made food related noises. I left the porch light on. I made him a warm house and left him food. I don't know what else to do. I am going to call the shelter tomorrow and make posters to give to the neighbors. All of this isn't enough. I am worried because it is freezing out and I would like to know what to expect or even what else I can do. I need some advice. please help me.

he probably is very close to the house, hunkered down for warmth- if you can call for him about 2:00 a.m. the world is quiet then and they do sometimes come to you. Keep the stress out of your voice (I know, it's hard, but crucial) if they hear stress, they won't respond-

Here is a website to help www.lost-pets.org

Kasia, I can imagine how distraught you feel, especially since it's so cold out now. You've already done some smart things to help your cat come home, or at least stay warm til he's back inside.

There's another very helpful website you can try, www.catsinthebag.org, that will give you more advice. A woman in my town used what she learned from the site to get her indoor-only cat back home. Her cat was gone 5 weeks, so don't give up! The sooner you use the tips on the site, the better.

Sending good thoughts and wishes for Lucky's quick return home. Please keep us updated.

also make sure you speak to the neighbourhood kids. thats how we found our cat (though she didnt want to come home!) a group of kids kept an eye out for her and carried copies of the posters we made with her photo and our phone number on. they rang us on their mobile phones as soon as they saw her. even though we couldnt catch her atleast we knew she was ok.

At the kitty's beck and call
I'm sorry to hear your kitty is missing - I hope he comes back really soon. You've got lots of good advice here. It may seem like a big adventure for him now, but before long he'll want his nice warm home and full dinner plate again.

Keep in touch with TCS - there's loads of people who can give you lots of help here

Kasia, I'm not very far from you either - I'm in Bergen County.

Call every shelter in your area and report him lost - and ask if anyone recently brought in a cat matching his description.

I hope you've looked at the websites that were mentioned to help you find Lucky. They'll explain the things you can do to bring him home. The "catsinthebag" site even has "psychological profiles" to help determine how your cat might react to being outside and which strategies to use depending on temperament.

You're going through a terrible time right now, and I can only imagine what it must be like. Don't give up, though. Chances are he's close by - but disoriented and scared, so keep trying.

Lucky is back. I found him in the neighbors yard today. He is in very good health and seems perfectly content.

Thanks to everyone for your support. I am so glad he is home.
